COLUMBUS, Neb. — Originally seeded sixth, the McCook High girls are now No. 4 entering this week’s Greater Nebraska Activities Conference basketball tourney.

Coach Amy Scheil’s Bison (3-3 record) will now play No. 4 host Columbus (2-5) rather than an anticipated rematch with No. 1 North Platte (7-1).

Tip time is 5:30 p.m. on Thursday in the Columbus High main gymnasium.

Ironically, the sixth-seeded Bison boys will play that same time vs. No. 1 Scottsbluff at the auxiliary gymnasium.

The GNAC tourney continues through Saturday’s championship games.

McCook’s girls were seeded sixth until the Nebraska High School Activities Association adjusted power points to add out-of-state contests.

The Bison defeated a Yuma, Colo., team which finished 23-3 last season.

Those Indians are 2-4 so far this season, but McCook’s point total increased to 38.429 ahead of Gering (38.33) and Hastings (38.167).

The entire GNAC girls’ first round now features No. 1 North Platte vs. No. 6 Hastings at 2 p.m., No. 2 Scottsbluff vs. No. 5 Gering set for 3:45 p.m. followed by McCook taking on those Columbus Discovers.

A win would move McCook into Friday’s 5:30 p.m. to face Scottsbluff or Gering.

The championship game is set for 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Win or lose, the Bison boys are set to play at 3:45 p.m. on Friday. The boys’ GNAC title contest is set for 3:15 p.m. on Saturday.

Scottsbluff’s 8-0 start features wins over teams from four states: Colorado, Wyoming, South Dakota and Nebraska.

In fact, the Bearcats have played only three games against Nebraska foes Sidney, Chadron and Alliance.

Watch for more GNAC details this week.
