BARTLEY, Neb. — The Cambridge Trojans conquered two of three foes to finish second at Thursday’s season-opening Southwest wrestling quadrangular.

Only the Wolfkings from Loomis-Bertrand were stronger with four consecutive dual wins.

The Trojans conquered tough duals over host Southwest, 47-33, and a solid Arapahoe squad, 46-36.

Southwest’s Garrett Latimer shows the power that made him a state qualifier last season while pinning Arapahoe foe Zurab Gogenia Thursday evening.

Most of the teams featured multiple open weights while getting their season started.

Against Southwest, the big Trojan wins were Julian Grindle’s 1:37 pin of 195-pound foe Kadyn Ramsey and Shane Horwart’s 17-1 tech fall of Tyler Ellis at 138.

The Roughriders earned more actual mat wins as Garrett Latimer earned a great 11-4 win over fellow returning state qualifier John tenBensel of Cambridge at 138.

Southwest’s Cole Downey (220) scored a 63-second pin of Keithen Huntley at 220 while heavyweight Bryson Shoemaker finished Trojan Taylor Donohue in 1:13.

Matt VanPelt also earned a 2:49 pin for Southwest of Gabe Huntley at 160.

Against Arapahoe, Keithen Huntley conquered 220-pounder Derek Sander and delivered a crucial 1:18 pin.

Horwart continued his strong debut at 120 when he pinned Dawson Meyers from Arapahoe in 1:22.

Christian Thompson matched Horwart’s time at 170 as he finished Warrior Jordan Smith in 1:22.

tenBensel was also triumphant with a dominating 17-5 victory over Ashton Downey.

The Warriors did score some strong wins like heavyweight Levi Kerner’s 31-second victory over Donohue.

Bryan Conn (113) was a 57-second pinner of Cambridge’s Aidan Gunderson.

The Warriors’ other two wins featured a Wyatt Jenkins 27-second pin of Gabe Huntley at 160 and Skyler Warburton winning in 1:46 over Grindle at 195.

Arapahoe outlasted Southwest, 48-30, in Thursday’s other dual matching Gazette-area teams.

Jenkins added another win, battling through an entertaining match and pinning Brett Tryon at the 5:56 mark.

Warburton pinned Cole Downey 40 seconds into their second period at 195.

Kerner looked strong as a returning heavyweight with his 1:02 pin of Shoemaker.

Southwest certainly held its ground, though, thanks to wins from Garrett Latimer in 1:38 over Zurab Gugenia at 1:37.

Jacob Kerns conquered Arapahoe’s Dominik Roberts as only five seconds remained in their 145-pound match.

All three teams couldn’t quite the better of a lively Loomis-Bertrand Wolfkings squad.

Loomis-Bertrand bested Southwest, 40-24, despite a Tryon 35-second pin of James Pazernik at 152.

The Wolfkings edged Cambridge, 42-36, though tenBensel and Gabe Huntley both scored pins.

Loomis-Bertrand topped Arapahoe, 42-30. A Warrior highlight was definitely Kerner’s 18-second pin of heavyweight foe Alex Booe. Jenkins and Smith also scored early pins.
