McCOOK, Neb. — Stephen Ray Stramel, age 67, of McCook, passed away Nov. 20, 2019, at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook.

He was born in McCook on Sept. 9, 1952, to Raymond and Betty Berdine (Metcalf) Stramel.

He graduated from McCook High School in 1970. He received both a bachelor of art degree and Master of art degree from Fort Hays State College in Hays, Kan. He then taught art at the college.

Stephen was an avid reader of art and art history, theology, world history, world politics and he enjoyed an extensive collection of music, especially classical. Stephen’s life was dedicated to art and other intellectual pursuits.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Betty; stepmother, Nadine (Hoyt-Young) Stramel; brother, Samuel; and stepsister, Teresa (Young) Speake.

Stephen is survived by two brothers, Randy Stramel and Daniel and wife, Leslie Stramel, both of McCook; sister, Marcia Morell and her partner, Theresa Wanek of Omaha, Neb.; step-brother, Alan and wife, Mary Lou Young of Los Alamitos, Calif.; three nieces, Elizabeth Morell, Katherine and husband, Matt Johnson, both of Omaha and Amanda Koperski of Erie, Colo.

Rosary will be recited at Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel on Friday, Nov. 29, 2019, at 7 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in McCook on Saturday, Nov. 30, 2019, at 10:30 a.m. with Father Gary Brethour officiating.

Inurnment will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery of McCook.

Memorials to Stephen will benefit St. Gregory Catholic Seminary in Seward, Neb., and may be left at Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel. Friends may leave online condolences at herrmannfh.com.
