CAMBRIDGE, Neb. — Cambridge’s Maria Jauken rolled to a 40 while leading the field in Thursday’s season-opening competition at Cross Creek Golf Course.

The Trojans, McCook, Southwest, Lexington and Dundy County-Stratton all played nine holes as potential afternoon rains stayed away.

Jauken fired four on the first hole to set a strong hole, one stroke better than teammate Ali Webb and McCook’s Hannah Goltl.

She consistently shot more fours and fives while only needed six strokes once to complete her fifth hole.

Bison junior Kaylie Puckett eventually delivered Jauken’s best challenge, placing second overall with a round of 49.

Goltl shot 52 for third best among varsity golfers competing. Senior Brooke Stewart totaled 58 for McCook which earned a top five finish.

Meanwhile, new Bison team member Joslyn Dwyer fired 50 and freshman Chayse Friehe finished at 53 while representing the JV team.

McCook coach Joel Arterburn said it was a good way to begin the season during his radio interview.

His Bison team has doubled from three golfers last fall to six.

“They (the Bison) walked away with smiles on their faces,” he said about Thursday’s opener. “They could see where they are going to fit and help us down the road.”

Lexington’s Zoey Salem shot 57 to place fourth overall.

Cambridge golfer Lexi Sines fired a 59 to place one stroke behind Stewart in sixth.

Southwest leader Cayleigh McConville totaled 60 to take seventh.

Trojan Chole Besler followed with a 64.

Roughrider teammates Kaylee Guerrero (65) and Alyssa Springer (66) completed the top 10.

Lauren Bailey was only stroke back at 67 while representing Dundy County-Stratton’s varsity squad.

No official team scores were kept in this opener.

The Bison will move on to a full week starting at Tuesday’s Sidney Invitational.

One week from today, McCook hosts its own invitational at Heritage Hills Country Club where Cambridge, DC-S and Southwest are scheduled to compete again.

Opening tee times for that tournament will be 9 a.m.

Watch for more details next week about all Bison and Gazette-area fall sports teams.
