School seeks proposals for new lighting

McCOOK, Neb. — The McCook School District is looking at replacing all lighting to save on energy costs.

“Requests for Qualifications” will be advertised for the installation of new, energy efficient lighting at all the district’s buildings, with three proposals needed per state law, said McCook Schools Business Manager John Brazell at the regular McCook School Board meeting Monday night.

Once received, these proposals would be forwarded to a school board committee to determine if it wants to move forward with the energy savings plan, Brazell said.

The committee’s recommendation would be forwarded to the full school board for approval. Brazell said the school district could get a low-interest energy savings loan from a local bank, at about 1%, with the payments on the loan to be paid back with savings from electricity bills.

The board took no action on the energy proposal as it was not listed on the agenda as an action item, only as a discussion item.

In other business, Brazell said he sent links to each school board member on job descriptions created for employees of the McCook School District. The job descriptions are a legal description of each job and are good to have in case of workman compensation issues, he said. The descriptions will be up for approval at the July meeting.

During administrative comments, Superintendent Grant Norgaard told the board that infrastructure projects over the summer include the updating of the social studies classroom at the high school and making a restroom at the junior high more wheelchair accessible.

Bathrooms are already ADA compliant, he said, but in anticipation of an incoming special needs student, the bathroom will be renovated for additional accessibility.
