CULBERTSON, Neb. —Virginia Lee (Huff) Schaffert, age 87, of Culbertson, passed away Monday, May 13, 2019, at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook, Neb.

Virginia was born Dec. 9, 1931, in Arapahoe, Neb., to parents, Carl and Clara (Burke) Huff. The family later moved to McCook, where Virginia graduated from McCook High School with the Class of 1949. She went on to attend Kearney State College.

On Jan. 1, 1951, Virginia married Gerald LaVern Schaffert in McCook and to this union two children were born, Gerry and Lesta. The Schaffert family moved to Culbertson, where they made their home until relocating back to McCook in 2013. Virginia enjoyed a rewarding teaching career, having taught at both District 8 in Red Willow County and at Trenton Public Schools for many years.

Virginia and Gerry were active members of St. Alban’s Parish in McCook. Virginia loved her home state and never passed up the opportunity for a political discussion. She had a great sense of humor and was always ready to share a favorite joke with others.

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Gerald L. Schaffert, in 2016.

Those left to celebrate her life include her children, Gerry “Craig” (Mike) Schaffert of San Francisco, Calif., and Lesta (Bruce) Zimmerman of Omaha, Neb.; grandsons, Andrew (Katie), Ryan (Rachel); and great-granddaughters, Natalie, Isabel and Emelia; sister, Dorothy (Orin) Nobles; sister-in-law, Joyce (Rollie) Snuttjer; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be Monday, May 20, 2019, beginning at 1 p.m., at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in McCook.

A private family inurnment will follow.
