YMCA Notes

Despite the fact that we can’t rule out another snowstorm, summer is technically right around the corner.

I literally got my vehicle blocked in last night at Cita Deli because I parked in front of a snowpile and a car parked behind me...not an issue I usually encounter in April. But this winter has been anything but usual.

But if we keep thinking positive thoughts, sunshine and warm temperatures will hopefully arrive and stay.

So we must be prepared and that means swimming lessons, lifeguarding classes and hitting the ballfields, so consider the following to keep the kids (and adults) busy and active over the next few months:

Girls Softball

Registration is open through Monday, April 22 for the YMCA’s girls youth softball league. The league has three divisions:

Prekindergarten and kindergartners, first through third grade, and fourth through sixth graders. Games are played during the week throughout May and June.

Adult Coed Softball

Not to leave out the adults, rosters are being accepted for the adult coed softball league through Tuesday, April 30 with games to start soon after on Tuesday and/or Thursday nights at the Jaycee Complex.

Rookie Sports

Before taking a hiatus for the summer, Rookie Sports for three-, four- and five-year-olds has one final session.

T-Ball begins the first Wednesday in May, focusing on the fundamentals and basic skills of the sport.

Lifeguard Classes

Just in time for the busy summer pool season, another lifeguard session begins next week over the following two weekends.

Participants must be pre-registered, be at least 15 years old, attend all class times in the session, and be able to swim 300 yards continuous using freestyle or breaststroke, swim with a 10 pound object and tread water for 2 minutes using just legs.

Swim Lessons

While the final spring swim lesson is in mid-session, the summer swim lessons are now available and open for registration. The lessons include the progressive levels, Stacie’s Otters and Parent-Tot lessons.

The schedule is varied between times of the day and even times this summer.

So if your child doesn’t like to get up until the crack of noon, maybe an afternoon lesson would be better.

Maybe there isn’t an open day until mid-July, there are lessons available then too. Just visit the YMCA website for a full schedule.

Summer swim team

The YMCA’s winter swim team officially wrapped up last month with awards, swimming and a primary reason the kids love it - a pizza party. And while the indoor league won’t resume until September, the summer swim league kicks off right after Memorial Day.

Practices begin inside at the YMCA before moving outside to the city swimming pool.

Community Hospital Wellness Run

Thank you to everyone who ran or walked Randy’s Run 5K/Half-Marathon last Saturday at Red Willow Reservoir, despite somewhat muddy conditions. But mark your calendars for Thursday, May 9.

Thanks to the generosity of Community Hospital, the next race is free of charge and is a great way to get the entire family active at no cost.

For more information on any of these activities, visit the YMCA website, www.mccookymca.org.
