Contracts for 2 new teachers approved

McCOOK, Neb. — Two new teachers were hired by the McCook School Board Monday night at the regular board meeting.

Both were hired on terms stated in the negotiated contract the school district has with the McCook Educational Association, the local teachers union that annually contracts salaries and benefits with the district. According to that contract, teacher’s salaries are derived from a starting salary and increase in steps for the number of years of teaching and/or additional educational experience, such as earning a Master’s degree.

Sarah Hoyt of Culbertson, Neb., was hired unanimously by the board for $40,690. She received a bachelor’s of arts degree in education from the University of Nebraska-Kearney in 1995. She will teach 10th grade English.

According to her resume, she has spent time raising her family is and is ready to enter education full-time. She has been substitute teaching at McCook Public Schools since 2017. She also taught English at Culbertson Schools from 1995-98.

Chelsea Jonte was hired unanimously for $39,077. She has a bachelor in science in secondary education from Fort Hays State University and taught junior and senior high science from 2017 to the present at Brewster Schools in Brewster, Kan.

She was also a long-term substitute teacher at Hays High School in Hays, Kan., in spring 2017. She will teach junior high science.
