Wet distillers mash spilled on the highway and a two-vehicle accident on Thursday, Feb. 28 disrupted traffic 11⁄2 miles east of McCook on Highway 6&34. According to an investigation of the accident completed by Red Willow County Sheriff's Department officers Chief Deputy Joe Koetter and Sgt. Steve Kotschwar, an eastbound 1999 Chevy pickup driven by James D. Essex, 30, of 805 East G, McCook, crossed the center line of the highway and, in the westbound lane, struck a 2008 Buick SUV driven westbound by Pauline L. Harper, 66, of 108 Center, Holbrook. No one was injured; both vehicles ended up in the north ditch and were totaled. The accident caused wet distillers mash, from a semi-truck and trailer, to be spilled across the highway, forcing the highway to be closed until it could be cleaned up. The report indicates that drug impairment is suspected on the part of Essex. Lap and shoulder restraints were used in the Harper SUV, and unknown in the Essex pickup.

  • So, how did the mash end up on the road?
