NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — Once the center of social activities for McCook, the former Elks Club will be cleared of asbestos in preparation for its new life as a college campus.

Meeting in North Platte on Wednesday, the Mid-Plains Community College board of governors approved a bid from Kearney-based Great Plains Asbestos Control for $74,300 to do complete abatement and disposal of asbestos-containing materials for the building, now called the McCook Community College East Campus.

Most recently the Republican River Valley Events Center, and once surrounded by a par-3 golf course, the building was donated to MPCC by Perry and Vicky Case three years ago.

The building’s use is being finalized as part of a long-term strategic plan.

In other business Wednesday, the board of governors accepted a clean audit report presented by Kevin Sylvester of Dana F. Cole and Co. LLP, and approved amendments to faculty negotiating agreements to allow instructors to choose a Health Savings Account.

The board adjourned without action following an executive session on personnel.

The next meeting is set for 6:30 p.m. Dec. 19 in North Platte.

  • Glad to see the first step in renovating the building is finally taking shape. It will be very interesting as to what happens to the building.
