MCC women go 0-2 in Iowa

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The McCook Community College Lady Indian basketball team dropped its second straight game in the Kirkwood Classic Saturday falling 77-69 to Southeastern Community College of Iowa.

“We gave this game away because our defense. Rebounding continues to slip, and we continue to give up way too many points,” McCook Community College Coach Kellen Fernetti said. “This all falls on me as a head coach for us not being the defensive team we need to be.”

After a good first quarter, the Lady Indians gave up 69 points through the next three periods.

“We cannot continue to give up the points we give up and expect to be successful moving forward,” Fernetti said.

MCC shot just 30 percent from the field and 27 percent from the 3-point line.

“We had a tough day shooting and those things happen,” Fernetti said. “What is concerning right now is how we are guarding and how we are rebounding, and again that is my fault as a coach.”

Sophomore Hailey Tiles (Rogers, Ark.) led MCC with 25 points. Freshman Nikki Cross (Melbourne, Australia) and freshman Makenna Bodette (Colorado Springs) each had 15 points. Sophomore Sam Hinkle (Rifle, Colo.) had 12 points. Bodette led MCC with 11 rebounds and Cross had five assists.

“We had this game and we let it slip away which is a tough one to take,” Fernetti said.

The Lady Indians (4-3 on the season) are on the road Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at Columbus for a game against Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference foe Central Community College.

MCC will be home over the Thanksgiving weekend hosting the MCC Thanksgiving Classic Nov. 23-24.

The four team tournament starts Friday at 5 p.m. with Northwest Kansas Technical College taking on Lamar Community College. The Lady Indians play Colorado State University Club team at 7 p.m.

On Saturday The CSU Club team plays Lamar at 1 p.m. and MCC will play Northwest Kansas Technical College in the final game of the tournament at 3 p.m. For more photos from the game, please visit the MCC Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/MPCCMcCook/
