Indians split a pair of tight contests

CHEYENNE, Wyo. – The McCook Community College Lady Indians got down early on the road but fought back to claim a three-point win Saturday over Laramie County Community College, 79-76.

“This was another great game tonight and good experience for us. Laramie County came out and really hit us with a run the first quarter, but we just kept battling and battling and we found a way,” MCC cCoach Kellen Fernetti said.

“We had some players step up in big time situations,” Fernetti said.

Sophomore Sam Hinkle, (Rifle Colo.) led MCC with 22 points.

Hailey Tiles (Rogers, Ark.) scored 15 points had nine rebounds and five assists.

Sophomore Anna Sanjuan, (Reus, Spain) scored 14 points.

Freshman Lena Goerke (Hamburg, Germany) scored 10 points.

Freshman Nikki Cross (Melbourne, Australia) tied for the team lead with nine rebounds.

The Lady Indians made 32 of 70 shots from the field (45.7 percent) including eight 3-pointers.

“It was a great game and a great atmosphere,” Fernetti said.

The Golden Eagles -- coming off a 105-36 win over North Platte Friday – fall to 2-2 on the season.

The 3-1 Lady Indians will follow up the Wyoming trip with a trip to Iowa with three games on tap.

TORRINGTON, Wyo. – The McCook Community College Lady Indians dropped their first decision of the 2018-2019 campaign but went to overtime before falling to Eastern Wyoming Friday, 90-84.

“What a game by our team,” coach Kellen Fernetti said. “We competed the whole way.”

The Lady Indians led at half-time 40-31 before the Lady Lancers ran out to a 24-14 edge in the third period.

Eastern Wyoming stretched the lead to six points several times in the fourth period but MCC was able to tie the game late and send the game into an extra five minutes.

“We had a great start, then got a little rattled late in the second quarter and into the third quarter,” Fernetti said. “We have great spirit and great enthusiasm. We will get better.”

Hinkle led the way for MCC with 17 points.

Freshman Makenna Bodette (Colorado Springs) had 14.

Tiles scored 13 and freshman Nikki Cross (Melbourne, Australia) scored 12.

Goerke led MCC on the boards with 13 rebounds.

The Lady Indians shot 35 percent from the floor and made eight 3-pointers.

“EWC is a good team and came back strong, “Fernetti said. “Hats off to them.”

MCC takes on William Penn Thursday at 6 p.m. in Oskaloosa, then at Cedar Rapids for the Kirkwood Classic where Fernetti’s squad takes on Kirkwood Community College Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday against Southeastern Community College at 1 p.m. The Indians host a Thanksgiving Classsic Nov. 22-24.
