Three killed in traffic accidents — victims identified

A Maywood man and a Stratton woman were killed in a head-on collision north of McCook Tuesday morning.

Tuesday evening, a 46-year-old Max man was killed near Benkelman.

Shortly before noon today, the Nebraska State Patrol identified those killed in the head-on as the driver of a car, William Shanahan, 72, of Maywood and passenger, Georgia Connor, 64, of Stratton. They were both pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the State Patrol, the crash occurred at approximately 10:45 a.m. when the 1993 Geo Prizm, traveling northbound on Highway 83, crossed the center line and struck a southbound semi nine miles north of McCook.

The driver of the semi, Brian Els, was not injured.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.

The Max man, Douglass Singer, was struck and killed by a car while walking on U.S. 34 three miles east of Benkelman.

Singer was killed at 6:30 p.m., and rainy weather and poor visibility are believed to have been contributing factors.

The car was driven by Makayla Wiese, 23, of O’Neill.
