Richard (Dick) Cecil Burton

Sept. 29, 1937 - Aug. 7, 2018

McCOOK, Neb. — Richard (Dick) Cecil Burton, was born in McCook on Sept. 29, 1937, to Cecil L. and Lois I. (Ungles) Burton and passed into the angels on Aug. 7, 2018, in North Platte, Neb.

Dick's early life followed his father's mechanical career, taking them to different parts of Southwest Nebraska. During this time he was joined by three brothers and three sisters, Bob, Pat, Peg, Corky, Ray and Pam. They made homes in Stratton, Oxford and Cambridge.

He graduated from Cambridge High School in 1955 and married Shirley L. Foster; to this union three children were born, Richard E. Deborrah L. and Rhonda S. They made their home in McCook. Dick worked several jobs before going work for the United States Postal Service. During his years at the postal service, Dick worked his way through the ranks to become a front window clerk, where he enjoyed engaging with the public on a daily basis. During this time of his life, the family enjoyed fishing, camping, and bowling. There were many bowling tournements and trophies won. Dick took great pride in teaching his three children how to bowl and how to be humble winners and gracious losers. He also was an avid and sometimes rabid Cornhusker fan. He followed the team religiously and could be found in front of the television or close to a radio on game days.

He and Shirley parted ways in 1979 and after a time he married Karen S. Bales who brought her daughters, Kim and Kelly, into his life. He continued to be close to all of his children and felt blessed to have such a full life. He and Karen enjoyed going to bowling tournaments and spending time with family and friends. They even took a Caribbean cruise with friends and family.

After his divorce from Karen, he enjoyed taking care of his house on the hill, gardening and taking up a new hobby of shooting in the American Pool Association, where he made many new friends and re-acquainted himself with some old ones. He loved to spend the winters in New Mexico with family.

Dick was preceded in death by his grandparents, Arthur and Gladys Burton; his parents, Cecil and Lois Burton, and Kim Campbell.

He is survived by Richard E. and Theresa Burton of Colby, Kan., Deborrah L. and James of Longview,Texas, Rhonda S. and Ken of Hershey, Neb., and Kelly Torres of Dodge City, Kan. He is also survived by his siblings, Robert Burton of McCook, Pat and Bob Bellamy of Loveland, Colo., Peg Schelling of Edison, Neb., Corky Burton of Ulysses, Kan., Ray and Cindy Burton of Ulysses, and Pam and Larry Corder of Kearney, Neb.
