Deadlines approaching for state primary elections

LINCOLN, Neb. — Deadlines are approaching for voting in the Nebraska-wide primary election on Tuesday, May 15.

According to the office of the Secretary of State:

Monday, April 30 is:

The postmark deadline for mailed-in voter registration;

The last day voter registrations can be completed online.

The last day voter registrations can be completed at the DMV, or completed at or returned to state agencies or departments.

The last day for a voter registration to be delivered to an election office by someone other than the person registering to vote.

The last day to mail an early voting ballot with a mail-in registration application form to a person not registered to vote.

The first day clerks and election commissioners may extend office hours for voter registration.

Tuesday, May 1 is:

The last day to accept a mail-in registration with an illegible postmark.

Friday, May 4 is:

The last day for a write-in candidate to file notarized affidavit and filing fee with the filing officer.

At 6 p.m., the last day for in-person voter registration.

At 6 p.m., the last day to receive an application for early voting ballots to be mailed out to a specific address.

Saturday, May 12 is:

The last day to publish sample ballots in newspapers.

Monday, May 14 is:

The last day for early in-person voting at the county clerk or election commissioner office.

Tuesday, May 15:

Voting places will open at 8 a.m. and close at 8 p.m.

Statewide candidates

— Republican Pete Ricketts has been Nebraska’s governor — its 40th — since 2015. His challenger is Republican Krystal Gabel of Omaha. Democratic candidates are Vanessa Gayle Ward of Omaha, Tyler A. Davis of Omaha and Bob Krist of Omaha.

— Republican Adrian Smith, of Gering, has been Nebraska’s District 3 representative in the Congress since 2007 and is challenged now by Republicans Kirk Penner of Aurora, Larry Lee Scott Bolinger of Alliance and Arron Kowalski of Grand Island. The Democratic candidate is Paul Theobald of Osmond.

— Also at the top of the statewide candidates list is the race for the seat in the U.S. Senate occupied by Deb Fischer, Republican, of Valentine, since January 2013. She is challenged by Republicans Jack Heidel of Omaha, Dennis Frank Macek of Lincoln, Jeffrey Lynn Stein of Omaha and Todd F. Watson of Lincoln. The Democratic candidates are Jane Raybould of Lincoln, Frank B. Svoboda of Lincoln, Larry Marvin of Fremont and Chris Janicek of Omaha. The Libertarian candidate is Jim Schultz of Lincoln.

— The race for District 44 state legislator will be decided in the general election in November. Incumbent Dan Hughes of Venango is challenged for his seat by Stephanie L. Malcolm of Palisade.

Hughes has served since 2014.
