McCOOK, Neb. — Leland Orvis, age 77, passed away Saturday, Oct. 28, 2017, at Community Hospital of McCook.

Leland was born in Wilsonville, Neb., on June 19, 1949, to Oliver and Camilla Celesine (Pahl) Orvis. Leland was baptized in the Wilsonville Methodist Church in 1952. In his youth he participated in football, basketball, softball and baseball, graduating from Wilsonville High School in May, 1958 and joining the Navy in June 1958, attending boot camp in San Diego, Calif. He served as a photographer after attending Aerial Photograph School in Pensacola, Fla.; the Naval Station at Sangley Point R.P; Light Photographic Squadron, Miramonte, Calif.; Naval Parachute Facility, El Centro, Calif.; Submarine Base on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii; and Submarine Tender U.S.S. Ferry A512.

Alta Vae Lienemann became his bride in the Wilsonville Methodist Church in August 1958. While serving his country, he and Alta Vae lived in Florida, Hawaii and California. He received the Vietnam Service Award and a Good Conduct medal.

Upon being discharged in May 1967, he worked as a photographer in the Naval Civil Engineer Lab in Port Hueneme, Calif.

Leland was a member of NRA and NARFE.

Alta Vae preceded him in death on July 11, 1997, and on Jan. 19, 1998, he married Carolyn (Wolfe-Lienemann) Hatfield. They bought a home in McCook, and alternated living in Oxnard, Calif., and McCook, their Nebraska trips coinciding with various hunting seasons. Until COPD ruled his life he enjoyed backpacking, camping, hunting, target practice…and his HARLEYS (one in California and one in Nebraska!) He thoroughly enjoyed his Harleys!

Preceding him in death was his father, Orville (1972); mother, Camilla (2009); step-father, Lawrence Orvis (2011); brothers, Leroy Orvis (1997) and Philip Orvis (2003); brothers-in-law, Max Leinemann (2003), Darlo Lienemann (2003) and LeeRoy Leinemann; sisters-in-law, Bonnie Orvis and Gwen Lienemann; and sister-in-law and husband, Opal and Elmer Heater.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn; daughters, Roxanne (Juan Carlos) Arce, Tonya (Jim) Sinniak, and Kelly (Jamie) Westbrooks; brother, Paul (Shirley) Orvis; sister-in-law, Susan Orvis; step-children, Kendall and Bennett Lienemann, Brenda (Dave) Higgins and Kim Bryant (Ken Millard); step-sisters and brothers, Kathy (Gary) Bergstrom, Larry (Jacque) Orvis, Nancy (Victor) Knutson, Kevin (Sue) Orvis; grandchildren, Nikki and Kyle Garcia, Alex Achoa, Gage, Casey (John) Gaffrey, Angela Garibaldi and Whitney Orvis; great-grandchildren, Brianna Munoz and Alexis Quiles; brothers-in-law, Don Lienemann, Larry Joe (Barbara) Wolfe; sisters-in-law, Marge Meader, Dorothy Tyler, Beverly Guthrie, Connie (Bob) Holliday, Myrna (George) Herren and Sharon (Jim) Bruening; and numerous other relatives and friends.

Memorial services will be Monday, Nov. 6, 2017, at 11 a.m. at McCook Christian Church in McCook with Rob Holliday officiating. Inurnment will be held at a later date.
