The good, the bad, and the ugly

Tuesday, October 17, 2017

Ding dong! The doorbell announced the arrival of two groups of church youths bearing gifts. The eager young people had been shopping items for Grannie Annie to send to “her” soldiers via her Adopt a Chaplain program. The funds to buy had been credited to each youth earned by hours volunteering at the county fair food booth. The young ones had chosen their items well and why not (?) a large percentage of the soldiers on the receiving end will be only a few years older than the bright young men and women that came to our door this past week. Grannie gives each donating group a short spiel on how the hard-earned gifts they donated will be distributed, in time for Christmas, at their destinations in Afghanistan, Iraq, Korea and on a couple U.S. Navy ships loaded with marines bobbing around (as she puts it) in areas near our other deployed personnel.

To date, Grannie Annie has also distributed several hundred Christmas cards to willing teachers with young students. Each will be written with a heartfelt personal message and a few will go into each box Grannie and her helpers send before Christmas. Yes I know Christmas is a religious holiday and has no place in the schools according to the secularists that have invaded big school but that isn’t how Grannie Annie and I plus most of you were raised. Chaplains tell us that some of their troops never receive letters from home and those cards and letters written by caring students and other loving Christians are the only letters of encouragement that those lonely soldiers might receive while so far away from home at Christmas. That is the good.

Now the bad and the ugly personified in wall-to-wall coverage of one of Hollywood’s finest Harvey Weinstein. Obviously, Harvey, currently pictured as overweight and of scrounge short beard, represents the ugly in your writer’s book and his track record personifies the bad. A rich major motion picture film producer who uses his position of power to take advantage of beautiful young women aspiring fame as actresses. Sexual advantage. Rumor has had it as the way of Hollywood, so long as I can remember, but here we have the picture of the man and reliable charges presented.

Obviously, Weinstein has had a long track record of sexually abusing women so my question is why are his misdeeds coming to light at this time? Is it because he has been a major donor to a certain political party? Is it because he has been a huge supporter, with money and presence, of a candidate who came in second in the last election?

Time will tell but for now, it is entertaining for this longtime political pundit to watch the ducking and diving to get away from the taint of associating with the now ugly Weinstein scandal.

That is the way I saw it.
