Bison, golfers struggle in hot Holdrege

HOLDREGE, Neb. — Keeping scores below the current outdoor temperature became tougher than expected for most Holdrege Invite golfers Thursday.

“Windy hot day. Ugly scores,” coach Joel Arterburn succinctly said after the Bison tied for fourth among 11 teams despite a rather lofty 409 team total.

Senior Cassiddy Redel’s 76 at Gothenburg two days earlier was 10 strokes lower than any golfer in Holdrege.

Redl fired 93 (45-48) to still earn fourth among all varsity golfers, and senior Holland Stagemeyer even cracked this top 10 at 97 (51-46).

Senior Holly Grigg’s 102 and a 117 from classmate Kylee Hauxwell completed the Bison score. They still outgolfed a determined Cambridge team (433) as well as Lexington (478), Holdrege B (497), Grand Island Northwest (506) and Dundy County-Stratton (516).

The Aurora Huskies (398) earned a one-stroke title win over Broken Bow (399).

Hastings (400) took third overall while McCook matched the host Dusters (409) in fourth place.

Senior Monique Witt was another Bison who conquered 18 holes on a record-setting day where temps reached 100 degrees in McCook. Holdrege likely wasn’t too far off that heat pace.

Cambridge’s Lexi Sines finished 15th overall (102) to lead the Trojans.

Ryann Lewis followed at 106 and Maria Jauken carded 108. Taylor Sayer (117) put the final touches on those Trojan top four.

Madison Haines’ 120 became the DC-S best followed by Caytynn Summers’ 122.

The individual title chase featured Hastings; Anna Cafferty winning a tie-breaker over Aurora’s Danica Badura.

They both shot 86s while Lexington’s Brooke Speer was third (87).

McCook, Cambridge and the Tigers are set to play in Dundy County-Stratton’s home golf invite on Tuesday in Benkelman.
