Bison teams get top-five finishes at Ogallala

OGALLALA, Neb. -- The McCook Bison had team finishes of fourth and fifth place at Thursday’s cross country invite at Ogallala.

The Bison boys scored 66 points to finish fourth out of 14 teams. Riley Mai led the way with a fourth-place time of 17:30.2. Isaac Hegwood was McCook’s second-best runner with an 18:50.4 to take 18th place, while T.J. Renner was 21st with 19:00.4. Steve Hinze, one of the Bison’s best runners, did not run at Thursday’s race.

Holdrege’s Gavin Klein won the boys’ race with a time of 17:01.7. Collin Brauer of Sidney was runner-up with 17:07.79. Brauer won last week’s McCook Invite, while Klein took second at the Heritage Hills course.

Rounding out the top five were Holdrege’s Tyler Peterson (17:21.7), Mai and Ogallala’s Jack Lindgren (17:43.2).

In the team race, Holdrege and Sidney stood out from the rest. The Dusters won the boys’ title with 26 team points, while the Red Raiders were second with 32. Perkins County was a distant third with 62.

In the girls’ race, McCook put in one of its best performances of the season finishing fifth as a team.

Jorlynn Chauncy ran a personal-best 21:49.3 to finish seventh overall. Elsi Rodewald was McCook’s only other medalist with an 11th-place time of 21:56.7.

Other McCook runners were Megan Hodgson (40th overall, 25:01.9) Mackenzie Larson (48th, 25:46.4) and Bethany Vogel (54th, 26:33.7).

Ogallala’s Lucia McKeag continued her strong 2017 season by winning the girls’ race with a time of 20:57.0. Holdrege’s Baylee Barnett was second with 21:17.9 followed by Maxwell’s Tahjzha Botts with 21:23.9. Botts won the Arapahoe Invite last Friday.

Holdrege won the team title with 32 points. Runner-up Sidney had 52 and Cozad had 69.
