MAYWOOD, Neb. -- Maywood-Hayes Center split two matches to finish second at its home tournament Monday in Maywood. The state-rated Wolves now have a 10-2 record.

MHC won its first match Monday with a 2-0 (25-18, 25-18) sweep of Arthur County. Rebel Sjeklocha had a team-high six kills, while Sydney Mullen-Shaw added five.

Jaycee Widener was credited with eight assists and Jaycee Lapp had three ace serves in the win.

“The girls kind of came out slow and not too intense,” said MHC head coach Kory Rohde. “We played well at times but lacked the level of intensity that we need to have. It set the tone for the night.”

In the championship match, Elwood handed MHC its second loss of the season with a 2-0 (25-19, 25-23) decision.

Avery Johnson pounded five terminations and Grace Koubek had six assists and three blocks to lead the Wolves.

“Our defense really hurt us tonight,” Rohde said. “We made some good plays throughout the game, but the lack of consistency cost us. Elwood is a good team, but we should have come out with more intensity and desire. We will learn from tonight and get better from it.”

South Platte defeated Arthur County 2-1 (25-10, 23-25, 25-13) to win the consolation match.

Up next for MHC will be a key RPAC battle with Wauneta-Palisade (8-2 record) on Thursday in Hayes Center.
