New auditorium ceiling enhancement, cemetery tour on chamber checklist

McCOOK, Neb. — A local group led by McCook Area Chamber of Commerce officials is researching options to provide a decorative ceiling to enhance events hosted at Memorial Auditorium.

“We’re trying to figure out a good way to do this,” said Executive Director Jamie Mockry during last week’s meeting of the McCook City Council. Mockry indicated the effort was prioritizing a false/decorative ceiling that could be customized for various events and stemmed from a winch and rigging system. He said the effort was prioritizing a system that required minimal labor, was built to last and highly safe.

The group is coordinating fundraising efforts for two winches, one managing east to west wiring to allow for a tent style ceiling and another that would pull straight up in the middle for circular ceiling options.

Mockry said it had been fun researching options and working with city officials, including building inspector Barry Mooney and City Manager Nate Schneider. He said the effort wasn’t looking for city funding just permission to proceed with the effort.

Mockry also provided a heads up to city leaders that a pair of McCook cemeteries would be receiving some attention during Heritage Days later this month, by way of costumed actors posing as some of the individuals buried locally.

“We will have some people in costumes portraying some of the people that are buried in our cemeteries. So, just wanted to give you guys more of a heads up on that, that’s kinda going on that day,” said Mockry with a laugh.

The “Heritage Cemetery Tour” is set for Sunday, Sept. 24, 2-4 p.m., at Riverview and Memorial Park cemeteries. Free will donations are appreciated, according to the chamber calendar.

  • What should we do with the old city auditorium? It is costing thetaxpapers more than what it is making from rentals for events. Beforewe spend more on it we need to decide what we should do with it.
