Bison top 100 points at Lex
LEXINGTON, Neb. -- A few more McCook wrestling highlights from the top six finish at Saturday's 16-team John Higgins Invitational.
McCook totaled 115 points, just four behind No. 5 finishing team Scott City, Kan. (119). Lincoln Southwest (157), Lexington (149), Holdrege (143.5) and Bennington (139) claimed the top four spots.
The Bison outscored Gothenburg (seventh, 113.5 teams), Sidney (85.5), Beatrice (82.5), North Platte (66), Cozad (48) and Hershey (36) among 10 teams behind them.
106 -- Sophomore Carson Richards reached 20 wins this season (20-6 record) with his consolation title, finishing ahead of 27-match winner Tanner York from Beatrice (27-8).
The two placing ahead of Richards own a combined 47-4 record this season.
195 -- Senior Jaret Matson (12-5 record) battled 25-1 Jarrett Myers of Lincoln Southwest for six full minutes until Myers pinned in the match's final moment.
Mattson still placed higher than Gothenburg junior powerhouse Noah Gugelman (35-9 record). The two could meet at tonight's Gothenburg Triangular.
220 -- Junior Kaleb Taylor (13-5) advanced to the finals of a tough class featuring 25-2 Brandon Titus of Holdrege, Bennington's Tyson Bruce (27-10) and Hershey junior Bryson McGahan (25-7).
Taylor took on 28-1 Connor Clanton from Lincoln Southwest with Clanton winning a 10-3 decision for the team champions.
285 -- Sophomore Colin Giron improved to 18-10 as one of the area's lighter heavyweights.
He wrestled into the consolation final ahead of Bennington senior Jason Brunk (24-13).
Adams Central's Zachary Wioskowski (25-6) was able to pin Giron in the final 17 seconds of their first period.
Giron could see tourney champion Hunter Brenn (21-2) from Holdrege at tonight's triangular.
The John Higgins Invite was clearly a high-level tournament as unddefeated wrestlers won 152, 160, 170. The best record was junior Derek Robb going to 38-0 at 152.
