Droughts cost Bison girls vs. Tigers, Whippets

Tuesday, January 17, 2017

Taking the baskets out of basketball continues to be a problem for McCook High girls this season.

A 17-0 third quarter decided the Hastings Tigers' 42-26 win Friday night.

On Saturday, McCook was hanging close to visiting Minden especially after junior Jaden Bryant found classmate Bailey Honn sneaking behind the defense.

Honn's catch, score and free throw brought the Bison within 12-9.

Sadly, not enough follow-up points arrived before halftime as Minden pulled away to the 54-27 triumph.

"It goes back to the same old song. We play well for three or five minutes but not consistently enough," Bison coach Scott Leisy said. "Minden's had a lot of success and produced (NCAA) Division I players. We can't dig ourselves a hole against teams like that."

The Whippets improved to 10-6 even without all-stater Taylor Kissinger, who's now missed 13 consecutive games because of a broken wrist.

They were coming off one painful 43-24 loss at Hastings St. Cecilia in their previous game.

"We needed a bounce back game. We were able to force some turnovers, hit a few shots and build confidence," coach Rick Chramosta commented. "We felt their (McCook's guards) were pretty good at attacking the basket, so we worked to take that away."

Juniors Erika Fisher and Brantleigh Morgan hit three-pointers for McCook (4-10 record).

Sisters also showed great teamwork when junior Holly Grigg delivered the ball to sophomore Robin Grigg, who hit a jumper.

Overall, Honn's six points led the Bison with Fisher adding five and Bryant four.

Robin Grigg and McKenzie Smith tallied two points each. Junior Emily Arp made one free throw. The Bison get ready for another home game today against Lexington. Varsity tip is scheduled at 5:30 p.m.
