Hitchcock commissioners interview assessor candidates
TRENTON, Neb. -- Hitchcock County commissioners interviewed two candidates for the vacant position of county assessor during their first meeting of the new year Monday.
The Hitchcock County News reports that neither applicant was hired because neither has an assessor's certificate.
The assessor's position became vacant following the successful recall of assessor Marlene Bedore on Nov. 8. Bedore started the position in January 2015 and came under fire early for what appeared to be favorable valuation and lower taxation of properties owned by her election supporters in 2014, and higher tax bills for those who supported her opponent in the election.
In October 2015, state property tax administrator Ruth Sorensen ruled that Bedore did not use proper valuation practices to ensure uniform and proportional property values.
