KEARNEY, Neb. -- A family spokesperson for a truck driver injured in an accident east of McCook on Dec. 29 says the man is recovering in Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Chester E. Bonds was driving a delivery truck westbound on Highway 6&34 at 8:54 a.m. when he struck the rear-end of the trailer of a westbound semi-truck slowing down to turn off the highway. Bonds' truck ended up in the north ditch; the trailer of the semi remained on the highway.

Bonds was transported to Community Hospital of McCook and then transferred to the Kearney hospital. A family member said Tuesday that Bonds suffered two collapsed lungs, seven broken ribs and a bruised heart. He has had surgery to repair his fractured pelvis, and will probably require surgery for neck injuries.

The Nebraska State Patrol trooper investigating the accident found suspected marijuana and a marijuana pipe in the cab of Bonds' truck.

The driver of the semi-truck was not injured.
