Indians 'sickly' strong

Deborah Kurtzer (14) and the McCook Community College Indians improved to 3-8 with a win over SCC Wednesday night.

BEATRICE, Neb. -- Struggling with her own strep throat, coach Hayley Kobza couldn't have mapped a better first long road trip for her sick McCook Community College volleyball team. Sleep all the way to Beatrice, jump up and sweep the home team, then right back to sleep.

The Indians did just that while scoring a 25- 16, 25-19, 25-19 road victory over Southeast Community College Kobza's first McCook team already owns more wins (three) than all of last season (two).

"We had a really good practice (on Tuesday)" Kobza remarked Thursday morning. "We slept all the way down there and all the way back, but we were ready to play."

Foes should never need no-doze when they face freshman hitters Tristan Trampe from Amherst and Alijahnae Springs of San Antonio, Texas.

They spread germs all through Southeast's gameplan with eight kills each.

Indian freshman Dylan Bylund blasted another six thunderous shots through the Storm defense.

Yet the coach was equally pleased about how her Indians breathed calmly in a potentially hostile arena.

"(Libero) Jessica Mahan had a really good game and showed great leadership," Kobza said. "She really took control of the court."

So Kobza could rest her own coaching voice?

"Oh no, I still yelled, it (strep) wasn't stopping me," she said.

The Indians are now 3-8 this season after finishing 2-40 a year ago. Southeast slipped to 3-11.

"The good thing is they are still not satisfied. They know they can play better," Kobza concluded. "And a few more are going to the doctor today."

The Indians can only rest until Friday's 6 p.m. match at Hesston (Kan.) College. They scored a 2-1 win over this same opponent during the McCook Tournament on Sept. 2.

McCook continues the trip at Cowley College in Arkansas City, Kan., on Saturday (2 p.m. start).
