Red Willow Western rural firefighters douse burning hay bales south of McCook Tuesday. Firefighter Billie Cole said they fought flames with water and foam from noon until about 5 p.m., and again in the evening for several hours. A neighbor brought a loader tractor and pulled the bales apart to get to hot, smoldering inner layers. Firefighters were back out early this morning fighting hot spots. Cole said they suspect spontaneous combustion, after up to four and five inches of rain followed by a couple 90-degree days last week. The hay belongs to Mike Macfee
