Broncos run wild through Creek

Monday, September 12, 2016
Horse-collar tackling was not the answer as Creek Valley's Anthony Rowley (7) was flagged for catching Wauneta-Palisade senior Brody Nordhausen (87). The Broncos defeated the Storm 61-30.

WAUNETA, Neb. -- Ty Duvel's parents clearly knew "T.D." would be the perfect initials for their football son.

What else could you say about a freshman who scores five touchdowns in his first varsity football game?

Duval ran 69 yards to daylight long before the sun had set on a cool Wauneta Friday night, setting one fantastic tone for Wauneta-Palisade against visiting Creek Valley.

With four other Broncos reaching the end zone, "What Playmakers" could easily stand for that W.P. on every Bronco helmet.

It all added up to a 61-30 Wauneta-Palisade home victory.

"Yes, Ty Duvel has a lot of potential," coach Joseph Frerichs commented. "We were very happy with our execution in the first half on offense, defense and special teams."

Indeed.

The Broncos (2-0) blasted to a 28-0 first-quarter lead that included junior Cash Yearous scooping up a Creek Valley fumble and dashing to six-point paradise.

The Broncos blasted to a 49-8 lead by interission -- far different than their tough 19-14 season-opening win at Leyton one week earlier.

Amazingly, freshmen scored seven of those eventual eight offensive TDs as Erick Jameson and Austen Rozelle also reached the end zone.

Together, the freshman trio rushed for 249 yards with Duvel gaining 144 on just 14 carries.

The Broncos only attempted five passes, but sophomores Duncan Rector and Dennis Cavanugh completed another four of them covering 44 yards.

Senior Brody Nordhausen rumbled to one more Bronco TD while averaging 6.3 yards per carry (six for 38).

Nordhausen's 14 total tackles led the Bronco D.

"With that said, we also saw many areas that still need improvement," Frerichs remarked. "We will be tested greatly next week vs. Stapleton."

The Broncos overcame an early-game injury to sophomore Joel Maris, who suffered both a broken and dislocated bone in one forearm.

Senior running back Tyler Davis sprained an ankle, but Frerichs hopes he will return to full speed against Stapleton.

Creek Valley slipped to 0-3 despite outscoring Wauneta-Palisade, 22- 12, after intermission. The Storm have allowed 61, 58 and 52 points so far this season.
