Saving a buck

Thursday, September 8, 2016

As a mother of three growing kiddos, I've been known to try and save a buck here and there. If I can catch a sale or online bargain, I'm gonna do it, because keeping up on everything for three girls can be a toughy!

Anyway, I came down the stairs the other night, glanced in the living room and saw everyone in my household sitting in a comatose state, eyes focused on their ipads and cell phones, while the tv blared some obnoxious nonsense. I looked over and saw the other tv was on too, with no one even in the room. I thought to myself, why in the heck do we have tv when everyone is watching shows and movies on their ipads or playing games on their phones. Light bulb! Maybe I should look into getting rid of the 536 TV channels we don't watch and save a few bucks while I'm at it?

So today I decided to give the ol' satellite company a jingle and just see what the process would be to get rid of it. The company and I, were like old friends or neighbors. We've been together almost 8 years now and have experienced a lot over the years; severe thunderstorms, dead remotes, and many an exciting Husker football game. However, I think it might be time we part as friends and move on to bigger and better pastures.

Anyway, I got on the horn with Account Services and got the friendliest gentleman named Kevin. I was afraid to ask Kevin right up front about how to leave cause I knew he'd beg me to stay, so I just started out by asking if I was obligated under any contract. Of course I wasn't duping Mr. Kevin and he immediately asked me if I was thinking of leaving him. "Oh gosh no! No, no, just wondering what my account restrictions are, Kev." Kevin still wasn't falling for my Tom Foolery and pulled on my heart strings by bringing up the fact that I had been with them over 7 whole years and that's older than his little daughter and, what a valued, long term customer I have been. How could I even think of leaving?

So as I continued to push for information on how one would discontinue their satellite service if, in fact, one would consider doing that, Kevin kept pushing back, offering out of this world discounts and laying on the guilt treatment nice and thick. But, finally, I couldn't take it anymore and yelled into the phone, "KEVIN....STOP!" And I asked Kevin, "Kevin, do you have any idea how much two homecoming dresses, shoes and jewelry is costing me right now? Kevin, do you know how much I spend on hair and makeup and beauty crap for three daughters? Do you have any inkling at all about how much money it takes to raise teenagers in general? If you did, Kevin, then you would stop hounding me to keep paying your company hundreds of wasted dollars to have service on tvs that don't get watched but about one hour a day and then have 3 million worthless channels that I can't imagine any human would watch. So, please Kevin, just tell me what I need to do to break up with you, return your property and say our goodbyes?"

Okay, so I didn't really say all that, but that's exactly what I was thinking as Kevin refused to let me dump him. At the end, I chickened out and told him I'd give it some more thought and let him know. But I am gonna dump him. I did some looking and found another cable company that is cheaper and more reliable and after adding it up, ol' Kevins gotta go! I'll do what I gotta do to save a buck here and there!
