Fire kills pet, damages home

McCOOK, Neb. -- A fire on West 10th Street Wednesday killed one pet and caused more than $25,000 in damage.

The McCook Fire Department responded to a report at approximately 10:30 a.m. Wednesday morning at 1508 West 10th Street, according to a press release. Fire department personnel encountered smoke coming from the structure upon arrival and quickly extinguished the fire after tracing it to the kitchen.

The fire caused extensive smoke and heat damage throughout the mobile home and firefighters removed three dogs from the residence, one of which died.

Initial damage estimates were in excess of $15,000 to the structure and $10,000 to the contents. Home owner John Crosby was not home at the time of the fire.

The fire department was on scene for two hours completing the extinguishment, salvage, overhaul, and investigation.

The operation involved 12 firefighters, two pumpers, one ladder truck, one command vehicle and two ambulances that responded to the scene.
