Carl Richard DeVries

CAMBRIDGE, Neb. -- Carl Richard DeVries, 89, of Cambridge, formerly of Beaver City, Nebraska, died Monday (Dec. 7, 2015), at Cambridge Manor.

He was born Feb. 22, 1926, at rural Arapahoe, Nebraska, to Tobias and Elsie (Hein) DeVries. He graduated from Arapahoe Public Schools in 1944. After high school he was drafted into and served two years in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theatre.

He married Audre Butenschoen at the First United Methodist Church in Arapahoe on Aug. 14, 1949.

They owned a farm northeast of Beaver City and farmed and raised livestock for 38 years.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Beaver City, past Grange Master, a Charter Lions Club member and NRD and Beaver City Public Schools board member. He was a seventh degree member of the National Grange.

He was preceded in death by his son, Bruce; parents; brothers, Wayne and Jack; sisters-in law, Marilyn (Johnson) and Diane (Haussler); sister, Phyllis Alexander and husband, Stanley; and brothers-in-law, Raymond Bockerman, Richard Frogge and Harry Wilson.

He is survived by his wife, Audre DeVries of Cambridge; children, David and wife, Joni DeVries of Ogallala, Curtis and wife, Catherine DeVries of San Diego, California and Ann and husband, Buddy Schwartz of Angel Fire, New Mexico; sisters, Mary Bockerman of Arapahoe, Dorothy Wilson of Inland and Elsie Mae Frogge of Grand Island; brothers, Bud and wife, Gwen DeVries of Arapahoe, Glenn and wife, Jo DeVries of Trumbull, Leonard and wife, Wyoma DeVries of Inland, Harold and wife, Kathy DeVries of Lincoln and Charles DeVries of Arapahoe; four grandchilden and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services are Saturday, Dec. 12, 2015, 2 p.m. at Heritage Plaza Chapel in Cambridge and at 4 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Beaver City with the Revs. Becky Saddler and Bill Weaver officiating. Private family inurnment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery in Beaver City.

There is no viewing or visitation as cremation was chosen.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Southern Valley FFA.
