Second bus added for POW camp tour

Thursday, June 4, 2015

McCOOK, Neb. -- Because of a recent flurry of signups officials at McCook Community College are adding a second bus to the June 12 "History's Mystery" tour of the Indianola Prisoner of War Camp. It's all part of the Buffalo Commons Storytelling weekend

The June 12 tour begins at 9 a.m. at McCook Community College where archeologist and POW researcher Allison Young will begin the day with a presentation at Tipton Hall. Young graduated from the University of Nebraska Lincoln with master's degree in anthropology / professional archaeology in 2013. She has worked as an archaeologist for the Forest Service in Washington state and a regional office of the National Park Service in Lincoln. She is currently serving as the park archaeologist of Ozark National Scenic Riverways in southeastern Missouri.

Following the presentation by Young on the MCC campus, participants will board busses and take a road trip to the POW camp site where the Indianola Historical Society will provide displays and community stories. Finally participants will tour the High Plains Museum and return to MCC for a relaxing lunch.

Cost for the tour only will be $30. Participants can receive a "bundled" discount for an additional $9 if they want to attend the "Storytelling Savvy" workshop.

That workshop begins at 3 p.m. at MCC with singer-songwriter Mike Adams, author-lecturer Kathryn Benzel, and poet/storyteller Chuck Peek. This trio will offer tips on how to research for stories, writing techniques, producing and performing stories for the public. This storytelling session is aimed at combining complementary arts for effect, story, music, poetry, and film.

These are just two of the many free and ticketed-events associated with the 2015 Buffalo Commons Storytelling Festival June 12-13.
