Wednesday rainfall

Thursday, May 30, 2013

The churning clouds of a slow-moving spring storm hover over southwestern Red Willow County, Nebraska, and dump up to 31⁄2 inches of rain in neighboring Hitchcock County late Wednesday afternoon. Intersections in low-lying areas of Culbertson flooded, while the heavy rain rushed down rows of young corn and into the Highway 6-34 road ditch just east of town. Culbertson also got pounded by hail for about 10 minutes, some stones measured at one inch. The storm produced hail in other parts of Southwest Nebraska, with stones measured at 11⁄2 inches 15 miles north of Parks in Dundy County and 11 miles southwest of Imperial in Chase County. Other locations reporting one-inch hail were Palisade in Hitchcock County, six miles south of Champion in Chase County, Curtis in Frontier County, and, in Red Willow County, four miles east of Culbertson and one mile north of McCook. Forecasters don't predict any more moisture until Monday.
