American Legion Posts support traveling wall

McCOOK, Nebraska -- The Red Willow County American Legion Posts and Auxiliary Units spring meeting was April 22, at St. Alban's Parish hall in McCook.

Dan Stramel of McCook Post 203 welcomed members.

The meeting was conducted by Dan Stramel, acting Commander in the absence of Joe Marquardt.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved.

Roll call: Bartley Post 1 Unit 2; Danbury Post 1 Unit 1; Indianola Post 4 Unit 2; Lebanon Post 1 Unit 2; McCook Post 1   Unit 1.

Dan gave a report on Junior Law Cadet program. The numbers have really dropped off in the last few years. It was determined that there is a need to have people from the posts go to the schools and promote this. Posts have lost three members in the last week: Floyd Finch and Melvin Nokes of the Lebanon Post and Harold Harsch of Bartley. Harold was a five year member in Lebanon and a 55 year member in Bartley.

Girls and Boys State Orientation took place April 21 and was reportedly well attended.

Stramel asked for help from each Post in bringing the Vietnam Traveling Wall to McCook. It will be here May 16-19. It will be set up at Weiland Field. They will need help in setting it up and taking it down. They will also need help with guard duty from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. on May 16, 17, and 18. The McCook Rotary, the Chamber of Commerce and small businesses are helping sponsor it.

It cost $7,500 to bring it here. Donations can be sent to the McCook National Bank.

The groups adjourned for separate meetings.

Lois Reiners conducted the Auxiliary meeting in the absense of Joy Maruardt.

The District No. 9 Convention will be in Kearney June 28, 29 and 30 at the Ramada Inn.

Joan Ward of Palisade will be installed as Department President. Installation of officers will be on Sunday, June 30.

The Fall Roundup will be Oct. 26, at Post 290, Elwood at 2 p.m.

The next county meeting will be in McCook on Oct. 22, at St. Alban's Parish Hall in McCook, hosted by Danbury. Time is 7:30 p.m.

The meeting was adjourned.

Dan Stramel closed the meeting with prayer and salute to the flag.

Refreshments were served.
