Bison girls reach B-6 District finals

The winter storm blanketing the state has forced a long list of changes in high school sports schedules in the midst of sub-district and district basketball tournaments.

Many of the boys sub-district basketball tournaments across the state have altered schedules due to the heavy snow that has fallen Wednesday and early Thursday, Feb. 20-21. There could be more changes ahead with more snow in the weekend forecast.

THE McCOOK GIRLS stayed on schedule in the Class B-6 District Tournament at Scottsbluff.

The Bison girls, top seed in the B-6 District, defeated fourth seed Alliance, 66-46, in semifinal action Thursday, Feb. 21. The B-6 District is being played at the Cougar Palace on the Western Nebraska Community College campus in Scottsbluff.

Gering, the third seed, upset second seed Sidney, 37-35, in the other B-6 semifinal Thursday night.

McCook will meet Gering Friday, Feb. 22, at 8 p.m. CST in the B-6 District championship finals. Friday's winner earns a berth in the Class B girls state basketball tournament at Lincoln Feb. 28-March 2.

SEVERAL BOYS sub-district tournament finals were moved from Thursday night. A long list of games were played Wednesday trying to beat the brunt of the winter storm. None of the sub-district and district tournament games Wednesday involved Gazette area teams.

The Class C2-10 Sub-District final between Southern Valley and Ravenna has been pushed back one day to Friday. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. Central time at the CLJ Middle School gym in Minden.

McCOOK will host the C2-11 Sub-District final between Dundy County-Stratton and North Platte St. Pat's. The DCS-St. Pat's game has been moved to Saturday, Feb. 23, at 7 p.m. at the MCC Events Center on the McCook Community College campus.

The D1-10 Sub-District final between Arapahoe and Cambridge has also been pushed back to Saturday. The Warriors and Trojans will tip-off at 2:30 p.m. at the Southern Valley High gym.

Wauneta-Palisade and Wallace will play the boys D2-10 Sub-District final Saturday at the Hayes Center High School gym starting at 7 p.m.

The first round and semifinal games in the D2-10 Sub-District were played at Cambridge High School. Officials moved the game to Hayes Center Saturday to cut down on travel for both teams and their fans.

SUB-DISTRICT tournament champions advance to District finals next week. Class C-1 and C-2 District finals are scheduled Monday, Feb. 25, with D-1 and D-2 District finals set for Tuesday, Feb. 26.

Two area girls teams won their respective sub-district tournaments last week and are scheduled to compete Friday, Feb. 22, in district finals, with a trip to the state tournament on the line.

Arapahoe will meet Alma in the D1-5 District final Friday at the Bertrand High School gym starting at 7:30 p.m. The winner qualifies for the girls Class D-1 State Tournament at Lincoln Feb. 28-March 2.

Wauneta-Palisade will face Brady in the D2-5 District final Friday at the Wallace High School gym, with tip-off set for 7 p.m. The winner advances to the Class D-2 State Tournament Feb. 28-March 2 at Lincoln.
