McCOOK, Nebraska -- McCook Community Foundation Fund reminds scholars from Red Willow, Furnas, Frontier, Hayes and Hitchcock counties that the deadline to apply for the Bernard and Nelda Haag Scholarship is March 15th. Students can apply for the $1,000 scholarship if they are starting college or currently enrolled in an accredited school of higher education and a resident within the five county region. Applications are available from area high school counselors, McCook Community College and McCook Community Foundation Fund through email foundation@mccookne.org or online at .org under the scholarships tab. Applicants will be notified by May 1, 2013 of awards.

The Haag Scholarship is presented annually by the McCook Community Foundation Fund through the generosity of Nelda Haag and her late husband Bernard. Nelda and Bernard have lived in Red Willow county all of their lives. Bernard served in the Air Force before marrying Nelda and farming south of Bartley for nearly 60 years. Bernard passed away in 2003. Nelda explained her desire to create the scholarship: "We are grateful to our community and want to ensure that our community continues to prosper. Bernard had one year of college and had to come home to work. He always valued the higher education and felt that it had life-long impact."

Since 2005, the Bernard and Nelda Haag Scholarship has awarded an annual scholarship to an area high school graduate who has demonstrated a dedication to rural Nebraska and diligence in pursuing higher education. Bernard and Nelda were always committed to helping family members attend college before Nelda expanded their generous spirit to all students of southwest Nebraska. "It is important to take care of our strong rural roots and encourage higher education to make our community stronger," Nelda explained. "By providing this scholarship, I hope that students will use the opportunity to make a difference for themselves and our rural families."

The Haag scholarship is based on applicants' extracurricular activities, leadership, work and/or volunteer experience, personal essay and financial need.
