SWNGS to have booth during Heritage Days

Friday, July 13, 2012

McCOOK, Nebraska -- President Tom Corey called meeting to order. Sue Doak made a motion to approve previous minutes as written. Treasurer's report was given.

A grave dowsing form is ready to go online. For those who didn't attend the on-site seminar at Memorial Park last fall, grave dowsing is taking two copper rods over a grave site. The rods move in different directions indicating male or female or circular for urn cremations. You can also get an indication as to size (height) of a person. This is very helpful for those ancestors who have unmarked graves. Yes, there are many spots even in local cemeteries where folks know it is a family plot but not all those buried in the plot may have an individual stone or marker.

SWNGS welcomes new member Holly Kennedy from Indianola.

SWNGS will have a space in the park during Heritage Days. The plan is to have a genealogy primer, including some "how to" notes available, along with pedigree charts and family group sheets.

Various members will be available to answer questions to help you get started in your family history search. Lesta Jaggers will reserve a space in the southwest corner on Norris Avenue.

Former McCookite, Linda Hein who is currently employed with the Nebraska State Historical Society in Lincoln, informs us she is working up a presentation for the state historical web site and the "how to's" to navigate the site for genealogists.

NSHS has recently spent much time over the past few years to become more genealogy friendly oriented.

The group is looking at an October date which gives time for planning and a place for meeting which once decided will be announced through our local minutes and/or you can pick up a flyer at the SWNGS booth in the park during Heritage Days.

Tom Corey will download Microsoft security essentials anti-virus program for the library computers as they are officially Internet accessible now to help anyone who is interested to see the many sites available for genealogist research or to help you get started recording your family history.

Due to 4th of July week, and the heat, it was decided to forego a July meeting. SWNGS next meeting will be in August date to be announced as they have been currently meeting on Thursday evenings. An announcement will be made on our Facebook page Southwest Nebraska Genealogy or you can send an email directly to: swngs@hotmail.com. The group hopes you have been enjoying the many recent write-ups by member Sue Doak and as always anyone is welcome to attend and receive help in your search for your family.

Meeting adjourned.

Sherrie Dack, Secretary/Treasurer

  • Dowsing? Seriously? I had no idea that people considered that to be a legitimate way to do genealogy.
