Elks select Henry and Ida Krieger scholarship winners
The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks have selected the winners of the $500 Henry and Ida Krieger scholarships for the 2012-13 academic year.
Winners are:
Steven Fish is a student at Chase County High School and is the son of Mark and Kathy Christensen of Imperial.
Fish competed in football, track, basketball and golf. He is a member of FFA, 4-H, FCA, Marching Band, student council and his church youth group. He also has served as class officer, worked on food pantry drives, breast cancer awareness and is a blood donor.
Blake Bergling is a student at Rawlins County High School and is the son of Mark and Gail Bergling of Ludell, Kansas.
He has competed in basketball, football and golf. He is a member of the National Honor Society, and has been involved with FFA throughout his high school career, serving as reporter, sentinel, and president. He has been class president and has been a member of the student council. He is active in Spanish Club, and SADD and was Prom King in his junior year.
Tanner H. Teel is a student at Southwest High School and is the son of Rick and Ann Teel of Indianola.
He has competed in golf, wrestling and football throughout his high school career and served on the student council for three years. He is a member of the National Honor Society, the CYO and Knights of Columbus.
Kyle G. Gaston is a student at McCook Senior High School and the son of Rod and Pam Gaston of McCook.
He has competed in cross country, basketball and track. He is a member of 4-H, FFA, Boy Scouts, CYO, the National Honor Society, student council, Math Club, the Southwest Nebraska Leadership Institute and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
Michael L. Bishop is a student at Hayes Center Public Schools and is the son of Gregg and Jeanne Bishop of Hayes Center.
He competed in football, basketball and track, where he received numerous awards and the opportunity to compete at the district and state levels. He also is a member of the Lettermen's Club, student council, choir, drama, FFA, 4-H and his church youth group. He also competed in Quiz Bowl and serves his community as a volunteer on the Hayes County Rural Volunteer Fire Department.
Betsy Hardin is a student at McCook Senior High School and the daughter of Ben and Susan Hardin of McCook.
She has competed in golf, swimming, tennis and the dance team. She also has served in student council and was class president in her freshman and sophomore years and class treasurer in her junior and senior years.
She is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes; Interact, where she served as treasurer during her junior year and vice president during her senior year; Art Club; National Honor Society; Mu Alpha Theta (math club); choir; girl's quartet; youth/adult praise team; and McCook Christian Church Youth Group. She also takes piano lessons.
She has been involved in Right to Life; helped paint a house for a low income family; participated in the United Way Fun Run; served as a game leader at Grade School Fun Night; helped with McCook Elementary's Fun Night; traveled to Mexico on mission trips; recycled bottles following local football games; helped clean up roadside trash; was co-director for Vacation Bible School; wrapped presents for the Toy Box; put gift bags together for East/West Shootout; helped with Feed the Flock community dinners; bell-ringer for Salvation Army; helped with VBS; participated in a Hometown Mission; was a prom server; participated in Trunk or Treating; Game leader for Church Harvest Party; helped with the Purple Pinky Project; was a fourth grade Fitness Fair instructor; worked with the church mission team in Kentucky and walked dog for the McCook Humane Society.
Elizabeth Snider is a student at Maywood High School and the daughter of Abraham Wakid and Lori Snider.
She has been named on the honor roll or received honorable mention throughout her high school career and has competed in volleyball, track and basketball. She also contributed her talents to the community play, helped with trash pick up, concession stand, a pancake feed, Toys for Tots, and the school carnival. She earns extra money doing housekeeping and baby-sitting.
Anissa Morosic is a student at Southwest High School and is the daughter of Joe and Alanna Morosic of Indianola.
Anissa carries a 4.0 grade point average and has taken college algebra and college statistic courses at McCook Community College.
She is a member of the National Honor Society where she served as vice president and has garnered multiple academic and athletic awards. She competed in Inter-High Day, and was honored with the highest achievement award in trigonometry, pre-calculus, English 10, Algebra 2 and Social Sciences.
She is a member of FBLA; FFA; choir, where she served as historian; St. John's Lutheran Church Youth Group; the church choir; and 4-H.
She has competed in Quiz Bowls; speech/drama; volleyball and track.
Volunteer work includes the Ronald McDonald House; Omaha Children's Hospital; 4-H Day Camp leader; fairgrounds clean-up; pantry food drive; and church cleaning and meals.
She has worked at Subway since 2010.
Tayler Trofholz is a student at Maywood High School and is the daughter of Bobbi Rose of Maywood and Scott Trofholz.
She is a member of 4-H, Future Business Leaders of America and FFA.
She has received numerous awards, including art awards, an FFA award, an FBLA award and student of the month. She also won first place in the Hoxie Barrel Racing Series and first place in barrel racing in the Shaggy Show.
Her community service includes volunteering for 4-H concessions and farm clean-up; bake sales and concessions.
She has worked as a waitress, done office work and worked at the Cafe and Store.
Mattie Uerling is a student at Southwest High School and is the daughter of Mark and Sherri Uerling of McCook.
With a 4.0 grade point average and dual credit classes at McCook Community College, she was selected by her teachers to attend the Nebraska Leadership Seminar in 2010 and was a member of the 2011-12 Southwest Leadership Institute class. She is a member of the National Honor Society where she served as secretary; 4-H; choir, where she served as vice president; FFA, where she served as historian and president; the youth choir at church; and 4-H council.
She has competed in the Quiz Bowl; Inter-High Days; and state FFA contests. She received the Highest Achievement Award in American History and was selected for the National 4-H Congress for record books.
She was the 2011 Heritage Days Queen in 2011 and was chosen for the University of Nebraska at Kearney Honor Choir.
Community activities include working as a 4-H Day Camp leader, fairground clean-up; monitored the exhibit hall, helped sand and repaint display shelves, and volunteered with the 4-H Council on Market Beef weigh-inday, helped set up the carnival and set up and helped serve at the Premium Sale.
She gave a presentation to the Rotary Club on her National 4-H Congress trip and volunteered at Ronald McDonald House and at Children's Hospital. She also assists with church clean-up and takes meals to the priests.
She has worked for Uerling Construction and at the Body Connection, and, under the banner of "Mattie's Painting Service," painted and done other tasks as part of her FFA SAE project.
