Human Trafficking Awareness seminar set

Tuesday, September 27, 2011

McCOOK, Nebraska -- The idyllic landscape, the down-to-earth people and the inborn self-sufficiency of the culture on the High Plains may conspire to hide a deep dark secret, happening in neighborhoods and communities that line the north/south corridor formed by U.S. Highway 83.

It is well-hidden for a reason. No one is supposed to know that it happens, because if they knew, they might do something to stop it.

"It" is human trafficking, whether for cheap labor, prostitution or child pornography.

Domestic Abuse/Sexual Assault Services and Aglow International are bringing the secret into the light of day, Oct. 8, 9 a.m.-noon, at Memorial Auditorium in McCook with the "Human Trafficking Awareness Seminar."

Al Riskowski, Nebraska Family Life Council, will define human trafficking.

Anna Brewer, a special agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Innocence Lost program, will talk about what is happening in Nebraska and how to report suspicious behavior.

Nebraska Sen. Mark Christensen will speak about what is going on with the state Legislature regarding this issue.

Leticia Bonifas with the Nebraska Domestic Violence Sexual Assault Coalition will talk about prevention, identify who is at risk and reveal signs of abuse.

Amber Knox, an advocate for victims of human trafficking, will explain how to help victims get back on their feet.

A free will offering will be accepted to help cover costs.

Riskowsi, Konz and Brewer also will speak to students at Southwest High School on Friday, Oct. 7.
