Culbertson walking trail wins grant

OMAHA, Nebraska -- Culbertson is one of 10 nonprofit organizations that have been awarded a total of $100,000 in BlueHealth Advantage Wellness Grants from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska.

The 2011 grant recipients include the Village of Culbertson, Two Rivers Walking Trail. Grant money will be used to resurface the trail and buy outdoor exercise equipment.

Each year, Blue Cross awards wellness grants to projects in greater Nebraska that show the most promise for bettering the health and well-being of community residents. Since 2008, the insurance company has awarded $334,000 in grants.

"As a Nebraska-based company, Blue Cross is happy to recognize our grant recipients for their commitment to building healthier communities," said Celann LaGreca, vice president of community investment at Blue Cross.

Other grant recipients (of $10,000 each) are:

* Gering's Northfield Elementary School, Wii are Fit -- A Wellness Partnership of School and Community.

* Central Nebraska Council on Alcoholism and Addictions, CATCH Kids Club (Grand Island)

* University of Nebraska at Kearney, Healthy Families (Holdrege)

* Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation, Fitness is Fun with Sam the Moose (Kearney)

* Lutheran Family Services of Nebraska, At Ease Outreach (Lexington)

* North Platte Public Schools Foundation, Kids Walk

* Valley County Health System & UNL Extension (Ord)

* York General Health Care Services, York on the Move

* YWCA of Adams County, Girls in Action

Blue Cross representatives will travel the state this summer to visit the communities and deliver checks to the winners.
