LINCOLN, Nebraska -- Burkett Richard Powell, 38, Lincoln, died Saturday, Dec. 18, 2010.

He was born in Lincoln, Nebraska on Jan. 9, 1972, to Richard and Vicki (Korell) Powell. Burkett attended school at Lake View Elementary, Everett Jr. High and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1990 with honors. He was a 4 year scholarship gymnast. He then graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a master's degree in engineering, and was a 4-year letter winner in gymnastics, achieving All American status. He was on the UNL 1994 National Championship Gymnastics team, coached by UNL legends Francis Allen, Jim Howard and current UNL head gymnastics coach Chuck Chmelka.

Burkett was the founder and President of BRP Enterprises in 1994, a manufacturer of commercial site furnishings. He was an avid music lover and recently produced a vocal CD. His interests also included water skiing, golfing, and all sports.

He was a past member of the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce and Updowntowners.

He was a loving son and beloved father to his three children.

Burkett is survived by his parents, Richard and Vicki Powell of Lincoln; son, Burkett Richard Powell II, Lees Summit, Missouri; daughters, Madison Lynn Powell and Gabriella Jean Powell of Omaha, Nebraska; sister, Shalla Ann-Song Powell-Mandigo and spouse Kevin Mandigo of Lincoln; grandmother, Leora Powell of Lincoln; niece, Greta Faye Mandigo of Lincoln; many aunts, uncles, including Van and Jan Korell of McCook; and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Ann and Glenn Korell and Everett Powell.

Memorial service at 11 a.m., Wednesday Dec. 22, 2010, at First-Plymouth Congregational Church, 2000 'D' Street, Lincoln, with Rev. Dr. James Keck officiating.

There is no visitation.
