BARTLEY, Nebraska -- A 46-year-old Arapahoe woman died Wednesday afternoon in a two-vehicle accident a mile west of Bartley, Nebraska, on Highway 6&34.

An accident report filed by the Nebraska State Patrol indicates that Lisa D. Ohrman of Arapahoe was killed when her westbound 2004 Pontiac Aztek SUV collided in the south lane with an eastbound International tractor-trailer rig driven by Calvin Peck, 52, of McCook.

The accident happened at 1:45 p.m.

Ohrman was pronounced dead at the scene. Her passenger, her mother, Edith Whitbeck, age and address unknown, was transported and admitted for treatment of moderate injuries to Tri Valley Health System Cambridge Memorial Hospital in Cambridge.

Neither woman was wearing a seat belt, according to the NSP trooper's report.

Peck was alone and uninjured; he was wearing a seat belt.

Ohrman's SUV was totaled; Peck's truck sustained moderate damage.

Assisting the State Patrol on the scene were officers of the Red Willow County Sheriff's Department and the Bartley and Indianola ambulance services.

Funeral services are pending with Wenburg Funeral Home in Arapahoe.

  • Why is it that Nebraskan's seem to refuse to wear seatbelts? That probably would not have saved lives in this accident but I continously read about people being thrown from vehicles. (A preventable event)

  • maybe we believe in personal responsibility and don't believe in the nanny state.

  • Remington81:

I concur, personal responsibility is paramount, but failure to use a device which in most cases would be life saving is irresponsible. I concur the government can dig a big hole and fall in it, (sometimes I wish they would pull the soil over themselves and be done with it), thus I don't advocate the government mandating usage of seatbelts: It is just that seatbelts are a common sense "added" safety item.

  • Maybe I just grew up with different teachings, but I always thought that personal responsibility and wearing a seat belt went hand in hand. I don't get how that changes just because the government tells us to wear seat belts.

Perhaps the Gazette could comment on why my and FarmerJoe's comments were removed. After glancing through the terms of service, none of them appear to have been violated.

Some one with influence with the gazett didnt like what you said and complained. I too have had several entries deleted. The editors never explain. This too will probably also be censored.

    Peace
