Nearly 20 people take part in a candlelight vigil to honor Target, the hero dog who helped stop a suicide bomber from entering the barracks of Bravo Co. 2-121 Infantry in Dand Patan Afghanistan, at the McCook Humane Society Friday evening. Target was accidently euthanized at an animal shelter in Arizona, where she lived with Sgt. Terry Young and his family. Young introduced Target and her hero companions, Rufus and Sasha to readers of the McCook Daily Gazette in February, just days after the attack. Young is the son-in-law of Mitch and Candy Farr of McCook. Lorie Prestes, shelter director, thanked those attending and shared her hope that the circumstances that led to Target's death may increase the call for "no kill" shelters. The Rev. Mike Searcey, Indianola Christian Church presided over the vigil with prayer, quoting Psalm 50:10 "For every beast of the forest is mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills." He also read a tribute to Target that closed with "Stand down, Target. Rest in peace."
