Surrender and save

Tuesday, March 23, 2010

These 3-week-old puppies were found in a box Saturday along a Southwest Nebraska highway, the mother anxiously pacing around the box, trying to get in the box to nurse the puppies. An alert motorist notified Lorie Prestes, McCook Humane Society Shelter director and the dam and puppies are now safely housed at the shelter. "I want people to know that we do not have a surrender fee at the shelter," said Prestes Monday, noting that donations to help offset the care and feeding of the animals are welcome. "I also want everyone to know that if for any reason, they have to part with a pet, don't worry about facing any kind of judgment here from shelter staff. That's why we're here." She does ask that anyone needing to surrender their animals call ahead to (308) 345-2372 to make an appointment so that staff and space will be available. Adoption fees are $50 for dogs and $25 for cats. Spay/Neuter Assistance refund coupons are provided with each adoption.
