Class B state softball tournament postponed

Wednesday, October 14, 2009

HASTINGS -- This time of year, the weather is usually a huge factor in high school athletic events.

Mother Nature is usually in control, as is the case at the 2009 Nebraska Class B Girls State Softball Championships.

The opening round of the state tournament Wednesday was postponed due to wet conditions at the Bill Smith Softball Complex in Hastings. McCook was scheduled to face Blair in first-round action.

McCook High School Athletic Director Darin Nichols said state meet officials have pushed the schedule back 24 hours. Opening-round action will now begin Thursday -- weather permitting -- with the tournament running through Saturday.

The Bison girls and Blair will meet Thursday at 12:30 p.m. on field B at the Hastings softball complex, as the entire tournament schedule has been pushed back one day.

If McCook beats Blair, the Bison would face the Beatrice-Plattsmouth winner Friday at 10 a.m. in the winner's bracket semifinals. If Blair tops McCook, the Bison would play Thursday at 5:30 p.m. against the Beatrice-Plattsmouth loser in an elimination contest.

The weather forecast for Hastings Wednesday called for showers with a high temperature of 39 degrees. The forecast improves Thursday, with partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the 50s, then partly cloudy Friday and sunny Saturday, with highs 51 both days.
