BENKELMAN -- Lois Elizabeth Enfield, 97, died Wednesday (July 22, 2009) at Sarah Ann Hester Memorial Home in Benkelman.

She was born June 13, 1912, in Davie County, N.C., to Samuel W. and Lola Elizabeth (Cook) Ellis, and moved with her family to Nebraska in 1922. She attended school and spent her early life in the Benkelman area.

She married Oscar Lloyd Enfield on Sept. 15, 1928. The family farmed in the area for several years until 1935, when they moved to Stevensville, Mont., where they were involved in dairy farming.

In 1942, she and her family moved to Portland, Ore., and worked in the shipyards. After the war, she owned a card and gift store. After the passing of her husband, she decided to return to Benkelman to be closer to her family. She spent the last years of her life at the Hester Memorial Home.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Lola Ellis; her husband, Oscar; her son, Lloyd; sisters, Sallie Teeter and Blanche Draper; and brothers, Dan Ellis and Ray Ellis.

Survivors include her granddaughter, Lisa Fansler and husband of Phoenix, Ariz.; granddaughter-in-law, Ligia Enfield of Portland, Ore.; one sister, Marjorie Reisher and husband, Jim and one brother, Glenn Ellis and wife, Betty, all of Benkelman; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were today at 2 p.m. (MT) at Forch Funeral Chapel in Benkelman with the Rev. Carole Coates officiating. Interment will followed services at the Benkelman Cemetery.

There will be no visitation.

Memorials may be given in her name to the United Methodist Church in Benkelman for the elevator fund.
