Murray, Bussell, Koch, Pollmann, Dolan win Decatur Fair races

Tuesday, August 5, 2008

OBERLIN -- The Decatur County Fair kicked off with races on the Decatur County Speedway Monday night at Oberlin.

It was a special night for the IMCA Modifieds, as the Blood, Sweat and Tears Touring Series was in town, and it was special for all classes, as it was the final points races of the year.

Oberlin drivers David Murray Jr. and Dalton Dolan were A Feature winners, as well as Nebraska drivers Justin Bussell of Imperial, Aaron Koch of Cambridge, and Max Pollmann of Trenton.

David Murray took the lead of the BST IMCA Modified A Feature on lap three, closely followed by McCook driver John Huffman. After a restart on lap eight, Huffman, who was starting only his fifth night in a new chassis, let Murray know he was there.

It did not phase the Oberlin driver, who promptly pulled away for his fourth win of the year at Oberlin alone. It also helped cement the track points championship for the IMCA Modifieds. Matt Brack of Mead, Colo., started on the last row after going to a backup car.

The motor on his regular car blew up during the heat races which required the change. In 25 laps, Brack improved 12 positions, finishing in third place. His brother Will Brack finished in fourth place.

Robby Haines of Benkelman made a pass on the last lap to sneak into the top five. Will Brack and David Murray were the heat race winners for the Modified division.

Justin Bussell was probably happy the IMCA Stock Car A Feature went only 10 laps. Bussell started on the outside of the front row, alongside heat race winner Larry Pollmann of McCook.

The high line seemed agreeable for the Stock Cars, which gave Bussell the advantage at the start.

Pollmann stayed right with him, and with two laps to go, made an attempt at a pass for the lead.

It failed, and he ran out of time to regroup and make another attempt. Pollmann's second place effort did help secure the IMCA Stock Car track championship. Dan Lauer of Norton finished in third place, ahead of Brad Wagoner of Colby and Brandon Clough of Wallace.

The IMCA Hobby Stock race had a terrible time getting started, but once a failing car was escorted from the track, and another car sent off because the driver was not wearing sufficient safety equipment, the race went off without a hitch.

Aaron Koch went to the head of the field on the opening lap, allowing the rest of the cars to battle in the back. Heat winner Kelly Karnopp of Norton and Austin Davis of Benkelman were passing cars simultaneously, with Davis up high and Karnopp down low.

Karnopp enjoyed the second spot for a while, but his car did not have the ponies to keep Davis at bay.

By the time Austin had moved into second spot, Koch was long gone. Behind Karnopp was Brad Conness of WaKeeney and Norman Wiechman of Scott City rounding out the top five.

Kelly Karnopp earned the IMCA Hobby Stock points championship for Decatur County Speedway.

Rick Touslee of Oberlin knew he needed to win the Classic Modified A Feature and have Max Pollmann have bad luck for him to even have a chance at tying for the points championship.

As the field came down the front stretch to take the green, Touslee's car made contact with Pollmann's car, resulting in the right rear tire coming off of Touslee's car, ending his night.

After a brief visit to the pits, heat winner Pollmann came back out on the track and restarted in the rear of the field.

With a few laps to go, Max drove by his father Loren Pollmann of Trenton for the lead, eventually winning his fifth track A Feature and the outright points title.

Larry Ayers of Oberlin spun once, but regrouped for a third place finish. Alex Pollmann of Trenton was credited with fourth place.

Dalton Dolan had sat out for nearly a month waiting for repairs on the motor of his Mini-Truck.

On Monday night, he was able to bring the truck out to the track and pick up where he left off, winning his third A Feature of the year.

Dale Heyen of Oberlin had perfect attendance at the five events at Oberlin, and that, as well as his second place finish helped him secure the track title.
