McCook Junior B's finish season 15-13

The McCook Junior B's American Legion baseball team was swept by the McCook City Team in a doubleheader Monday at Jaycees Sports Complex.

The City Team won the opener 16-3 in three innings and the nightcap 17-4 in four innings.

The McCook Junior B's finished the season with a 15-13 record.

In the first game, the City Team scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning, three in the second and eight in the third on seven hits. The Junior B's scored one run in the top of the first and two in the third on two hits.

The teams combined for five errors.

Drew Bredvick, Josh Escher and Cameron Burkey pitched for the Junior B's. Spencer Gillen and Grant Wilcox pitched the City Team, with Gillen picking up the win.

Keegan Williams and Drew Bredvick each had a single for the Junior B's. Gillen had three singles, Jimmy Barron a double and a single and Wilcox and Mark Nichols each singled for the City Team.

In the second game, the City Team was the visitors. The squad scored two runs in the top of the first, four in the second and 11 in the fourth on 10 hits and five Junior B errors.

The Junior B's scored all four of their runs in the bottom of the second and collected four hits.

Williams and Zayne Gillen pitched for the Junior B's. Donovan DeHarty, Brad Baumbach and Nichols pitched for the City Team, with DeHarty getting the win.

Williams and Gavin Harsh each had two singles for the Junior B's. Nichols belted two home runs and triple for the City Team.

Austin Huffman tripled and doubled. Spencer Gillen, Barron, Brendan Funk, Austin Bishop and Garrett Wagner each singled.

MNB Seniors 1-2 at Kearney tourney -- The McCook National Bank Seniors went 1-2 at the Kearney Thirsty's Tournament.

McCook lost to Sutton 5-3 and the Kearney Thirsty's Five 13-2 Friday and blasted Sidney 14-7 Sunday.

In Game 1 against Sutton, McCook went down 2-0 in the top of the third, but came back in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 3-2. Sutton scored in the top of the fifth, then in the top of the seventh, Sutton added two more runs and McCook couldn't answer.

Mike Grabowski took the loss on the mound. Grabowski had nine strikeouts.

Shane Wallen, Austin Larson, Dillon Goltl and Jeff Lorentz each had a hit.

In the first inning of the Kearney game, McCook scored after Colton Cochran doubled and Cody Broomfield singled for the RBI.

The bottom of the first wasn't a good inning for McCook with six walks and two hit batters. McCook ended that inning down 6-1.

Kearney scored four runs on five hits in the second inning to make the score 10-1.

The losing pitcher for McCook was Sam Frazier. In relief was Adam Krueger.

Cody Broomfield and Dillon Goltl each went 2-for-3. Jackson Johnson, Cochran, Wallen, Larson, and Cletus Macke.

In Game 3 Sunday morning, the first four innings went back and forth -- McCook led 2-1 after one inning, Sidney 3-2 after two innings and McCook 6-3 after three innings. Sidney tied the score at 7-7. McCook scored seven runs in the sixth inning to win the game.

Jackson Johnson started on the mound for McCook and Jeff Lorentz came in at the top of the fifth to get the win.

Broomfield went 3-for-4 with four RBIs.

Johnson, Wallen and Goltl each got two hits in the game. Cochran doubled and Grabowski, Macke and Lorentz each had a hit.

The Seniors improved to 12-11.

Cochran, Johnson and Grabowski will compete in an All-Star Game Thursday at Kearney.

McCook plays doubleheaders at Colby and Grand Island July 16 and 18 before wrapping up the regular season July 19 with a doubleheader against North Platte.

The Seniors are the No. 4 seed for the B6 Area Tournament July 23-28 at Lexington.

MNB plays Kearney County in a first-round game at 2 p.m. July 23.

The Class B state tournament is Aug. 1-5 at St. Paul.

McCook Juniors -- The McCook First Central Bank Juniors play a doubleheader tonight at North Platte, starting at 5 p.m., and will host Wauneta at 7 p.m. Thursday.

FCB will compete in the B6 Juniors District Tournament July 12-20 at Cozad.

The Juniors (4-16-1) will play Hershland in a first-round game at 11 a.m. July 13.

The Class B Juniors state tournament is July 25-29 at Nebraska City.
