Century 21 Cubs win 2008 Cubs Tourney

Lisa Suda The Century 21 Cubs won the McCook Midget Baseball Association Cubs Tournament. Team members are Brock Scott, Kolton Stone, Branden Lucas, Colton Lashley, Adryan Lucero, Dalton Goodenberger, Frankie Williams, Logan Bunger, Travis Wallen, Matt Macfee and Christian Olson. Marty Lashley is the head coach. Assistants are Tim Hohn and Andy Bunger.

The McCook Midget Baseball Association, Inc. Cubs Division Wal-Mart Championship Tournament was played Thursday-Sunday at Felling Field.

Wal-Mart sponsored the tournament with trophies and medals.

For the second time in two years the sixth-seeded team won the tournament.

Lisa Suda The Sears Yankees placed second in the MMBA Cubs Tournament. Members are Tyler Monzon, Garrett Smith, Ian Pearson, Kasey Taylor, Darius Williams, Delton Ulmer, Lance Garcia, Keith Helm, Dustin Payton, Caleb Sheets and Michael Lord. Harold Pearson is the head coach. Assistant coaches are James Taylor and Paul Sheets.

In a tournament where the 1, 2 and 3 seeds fell in the elimination bracket, the race for the championship side of the bracket rested in the bats and gloves of the middle and lower seeds of the tournament.

The Century 21 Cubs played throughout the tournament without a loss and won the championship.

Members are Nick Baumfalk, Robin Suda, Darius Boli, Andrew Messersmith, Mitchell Reitz, Max Allen, Gavin Klie, Luke Curl, Trae Heathers, Caleb Suda and Cole Leach. Colyn Suda is the head coach. Assistant coaches are Lisa Suda and Darrel Messersmith.

Game 1: No. 9 McCook National

Bank Astros 11,

No. 8 Lifetime Eyecare Rockies 7

The Astros got on the board first in the top of the first with hits from Austin Blume and Logan Kircher with both scoring.

The Rockies held the Astros to one run in the second with a single by Jeremiah Jaramillo while carding two with Kalan Stamm singling.

The third saw both teams card three runs with singles for the Astros by Dylan Samway and Blume with support for the Rockies coming from singles by Connor Stamm and Riley Loop while Matthew Carfield doubled.

In the fourth inning, the Rockies went four up and three down. The Astros scored four more runs on singles by Samway and Blume.

Game 2: No. 7 Miller &

Associates Red Sox 14,

No. 10 B & M Drywall Mets 13

A one hour, 15 minute weather delay change the tone of the game. A five-run fourth inning and six-run fifth inning to win this game.

A double by Wesley Burkert helped the Red Sox in the fourth score three runs. The Red Sox went ahead 4-3 in the first inning while the Mets put up four runs on a single by Trevor Van Pelt and a double by Branden Kofler.

The Mets scored five runs in the second inning to jump up to a 9-1 lead. The Red Sox put up two more runs in the third and then the weather came in and delayed the game.

Eleven runs in the fourth and fifth gave Red Sox the win and sent the Mets to the elimination bracket.

Game 3: No. 6 Century 21 Cubs 5,

No. 3 Wells Fargo D'Backs 0

A scoreless second and one-run third inning by the Cubs kept this game close in the early innings.

Jon Spilinek went 2 for 2 with a double and a single while Zack Strecker, Peyton Stagemeyer and Spencer Leitner singled each for the D'Backs.

A double by Colton Lashley was scored on Kolton Stone's triple while Dalton Goodenberger doubled and Travis Wallen singled to aide the Cubs in the win.

Game 4: No. 4 Sears Yankees 14,

No. 5 McCook Carpets/

Color Tile Reds 8

This middle bracket games saw three runs scored in the first only to have the Yankees score seven runs in the second to the Reds crossing only two runs.

A three-run third inning for the Reds wasn't enough to match the five runs scored by the Yankees in the bottom half of the inning.

The Reds held the Yankees in the fourth to only one run but couldn't get any across in the fourth or fifth to narrow the gap.

Ben Skiles singled for the Reds while Caleb Sheets and Lance Garcia each went 2 for 3 with each getting a double and single. Garret Smith, Delton Ulmer, Ian Pearson and T.J. Monzon all had singles to help the Yankees get the win.

Game 5: No. 7 Miller & Associates Red Sox 4,

No. 2 The Sports Shoppe Brewers 3

This game would mark the beginning of the drop by the season's division winners to the elimination bracket in what would be one of the close games requiring use of the international tie-breaker to settle the game.

The Brewers retired the side in their half of the first inning.

Singles by Darius Boli and Robin Suda tied the game at 1-0 to end the first. The second inning saw the Brewers again retire the side but went 4 up 3 down in their half without a run with only a single from Caleb Suda.

In the third and fourth innings, both teams retired the side leaving the game at 2-0 to start the fifth. The Red Sox had Spencer Powell hit a triple and he and Jarrod Bryant crossed the plate for two runs to tie up the Brewers.

Nick Baumfalk singled for the Brewers but the next three batters struck out to leave the game at 2-2. The sixth inning tie-breaker was scoreless.

The Red Sox plated Burkert and Powell in the seventh. The Brewers' Boli crossed in the seventh on a single by Robin Suda but saw the remainder of the top of the order go 3 up 3 down.

Game 6: No. 9 McCook National

Bank Astros 10,

No. 1 Parker Indians 6

The Astros put two runs across in the first on a single by Blume and a double by Samway. The Indians saw the top of their order go 4 up and 3 down to end the first inning.

The Astros plated three more runs in the second on singles by Samway, Fritsche and David Jaramillo. The Indians scored four runs in the third on singles by Noah Hofman, Chase Midkiff and Bret Baumbach.

In the fourth inning, the Astros saw Blume and Samway double and single to help add a run. The Indians' Cody Harrison and Sean Tolliver crossed on a triple hit by Tyler Cuellar to right field.

D. Jaramillo singled and scored in the fifth for the Astros while the Indians' side was retired to set the second upset of division winners in as many games pushing the Indians into the Elimination Bracket.

Game 7: Wells Fargo D'Backs 6,

Lifetime Eyecare Rockies 4

The Rockies went 4 up and 3 down in this elimination game's first inning. The D'Backs plated four runs in the first to take the lead with hits by Stagemeyer, Spilinek, Kaden Sitzman and Asic Helberg.

In the second inning, the Rockies' Loop crossed after getting a hit and a couple of steals. The D'Backs plated another run in the second on hits by Eric Eiler and Devin Flaherty.

The Rockies drew three strikeouts in the third with the D'Backs going 4 up 3 down.

The Rockies added three runs in the fourth with hits by Keaton Garcia, Loop and Carfield. The D'Backs held the Rockies scoreless in the fifth to win the game.

Game 8: B & M Drywall Mets 6,

McCook Carpets/Color Tile 4

In a pitcher's duel, this match started with the Reds' side being retired only to have the Mets side retired in their half of the first as well. The second saw the Reds being retired again 3 up 3 down.

The Mets used the opportunity to plate three runs on hits by Trevor Matson and Brandon Koefler. Matson, Koefler and Kyle Van Pelt crossed for the three runs.

The Rockies used this opportunity to plate Jesse Detty, Van Pelt, Matson and Koefler to take a 6-0 lead after three innings.

The Reds got their bats going in the fourth. Vince Lyons, Bryce Lyons, Ryan Spector and Dawson Brunswick crossed the plate.

The Rockies pitched another 4 up 3 down inning in the fifth to win the game 6-4.

Game 9: Sears Yankees 8,

McCook National Bank Astros 7

The Astros' Kircher crossed in the first while the Yankees plated five runs to take the lead at the end of one inning.

In the second, the Astros pushed three runs across to narrow the gap while holding the Yankees to no runs on a double by Kasey Taylor.

The Yankees retired the side in the third but were also held scoreless in the third to keep the game close.

In the fourth, the Yankees held the Astros scoreless on a 4 up 3 down inning with Taylor Williams drawing the only walk but again were held scoreless in the bottom of the fourth.

In the fifth, the Astros took the lead 6-5 in their half of the inning on hits by Kircher and Blume. The Yankees put up one on a double by Sheets who stole and scored to tie up the game at the end of five at 6-6. In the first inning of the tie-breaker, Dustin Bredvick stole third and home to score for the Astros.

Pearson scored for the Yankees in the sixth to tie the game and Ulmer stole home to win the game for the Yankees.

Game 10: Century 21 Cubs 6,

Miller & Associates Red Sox 5

The Red Sox scored three runs coming in the first from Burkert, Powell and Coy Terry on hits by Bryant, Peck, Terry and Powell.

Burkert crossed home in the third to add one run for the Sox.

The Cubs again retired the Sox facing three batters in the third and plated two runs on hits by Brock Scott and Goodenberger.

In the fifth, the Red Sox had Powell hit and cross the plate to take a 5-2 lead. In the bottom of the inning, the Cubs saw hits by Branden Lucas, Lashley and Logan Bunger to drive in earlier walks causing Adryan Lucero, Lucas, Lashley and Bunger to score pushing the score to 6-5.

Game 11: The Sports Shoppe Brewers 14,

Wells Fargo D'Backs 4

At the end of one inning, the D'Backs led 1-0 on hits by Spilinek and Sitzman with Robin Suda garnering the only hit for the Brewers in the inning.

Each team posted two runs in the second to end at 3-2 with James Mitnik and Eiler scoring for the D'Backs while Caleb Suda and Cole Leach drove in Andrew Messersmith and Max Allen with hits.

The top of the third was good to the Brewers with seven runs crossing the plate on hits by Robin Suda, Baumfalk, Gavin Klie, Mitchell Reitz, Max Allen, Caleb Suda and Leach.

Both teams retired the side in the 4thand Messersmith's hit in the fifth scored Reitz to finish up the game.

Game 12: Parker Indians 14,

B & M Drywall Mets 1

The No. 1 seeded Indians playing in an elimination game brought their bats in the top half of the inning scoring nine runs on seven hits.

Levi Baughman, Midkiff, Baumbach, Tyler Cuellar, Miles Dack, Hofman and Clark all crossed the plate and hit in the first.

Jesse Detty was the lone hit in the first for the Mets with the Indians only facing four batters. Baughman and Baumbach crossed the plate in the second inning on hits paired up with stolen bases.

The Mets saw a 4 up 3 down inning with Chance Koetter making it to first. The third was another two-run inning for the Indians while they retired the side for the Mets.

In the fourth, the Indians added one run with Baughman scoring in all three appearances.

Trevor Matson hit a double to start for the fifth for the Mets and stole third and home for the lone score for the Mets.

Game 13: The Sports Shoppe Brewers 4,

McCook National Bank Astros 3

This low scoring game pitted the No. 2 seed versus the No. 9 seed in what was another match that the defense of both teams played well.

The Brewers opened with a hit by Boli with a couple of walks and stolen base scoring Boli for the only run of the inning.

The Astros followed with Kircher scoring on a double and Blume doubling to drive in Kircher.

The Brewers platted Max Allen in the second on a sacrifice hit by Leach. The Astros were retired in a 3 up 3 down fashion in their half of the second.

The third was scoreless for both teams while both retired their respective sides and the score stood at 2-1.

The Brewers scored two in the fourth on hits by Reitz, Leach and Luke Curl. Jacob Fritsche, Bredvick and Stephen Kirk all hit in the fourth to score Fritsche for the Astros.

In the top of the fifth, the Astros held the Brewers scoreless on Robin Suda's hit.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Astros had the top of their order up but saw Blume and Fritsche hit and scoring Blume but fell one run short to lose to the Brewers.

Game 14: Miller & Associates Red Sox 7,

Parker Indians 3

The Indians put up a run in the first with Midkiff scoring and retired the Red Sox side to finish the inning 1-0.

Parker added a run in the second with a hit, stolen bases and score by Dack.

The Red Sox tied up their side of the inning 2-2 with hits by Powell, Bryant and Peck with Burkert and Powell scoring.

Devon Strunk hit for the Indians in the third but the Indians drew two strikeouts and a force out to end the inning.

In the fourth inning, Parker scored Baumbach on a hit by Clark to take the lead 3-2.

The top of the order for the Red Sox all scored in the fourth with Rathe, Zuck and Terry all hitting and scoring. Bryant hit to drive in one of the runs.

The Sox faced five batters in the fifth and got outs for the win.

Championship bracket

Game 15: Century 21 Cubs 3,

Sears Yankees 2

In the championship bracket, the Yankees faced the Cubs in what would turn out to be the second lowest scoring game of the tournament.

Lashley and Bunger would score in the first for the Cubs on a single and walk with stolen bases to support their team.

A lead-off triple by Taylor in the Yankees' half of the inning would cut the margin to one.

The Cubs put up four batters in the second and were held scoreless. Lance Garcia singled in the second for the Yankees but good defense by the Cubs and a strikeout ended the inning.

In the third inning, Lashley hit a triple driving in Lucero for the Cubs only to have Taylor, who went 2 for 2 in multi-base hits, score when Monzon doubled.

Elimination bracket semifinal

The Sports Shoppe Brewers 10,

Miller & Associates Red Sox 1

A single by Robin Suda in the first was all the production the Red Sox would allow the visiting team in this elimination semifinal game.

Kody Rathe doubled with Allen Zuck doubling as well driving in Rathe for the lone run of the first inning.

The Brewers got Reitz on with a walk and scored him, but saw the next three batters fly out and foul out to finish their half of the second. The Brewers retired the Red Sox side in the bottom of the second.

A four-run third inning was led by a Boli single, Robin Suda double, Baumfalk double and single by Leach. Trae Heathers, Boli, Suda and Leach accounted for the four runs.

The Brewers again put up a four-run fourth inning with Boli driving in two of the four runs.

A single by Messersmith in the fifth and a double by Leach clinched the game for the Brewers as they retired the Red Sox in the bottom of the fifth.

Elimination bracket semifinal

Sears Yankees 3,

The Sports Shoppe Brewers 1

This game saw a battle of pitching staffs come to light as the hitters on both teams were fanned at different times to keep this a tight game.

Boli had a lead-off double to start the Brewers' half of the first inning and was scored by Baumfalk to take the 1-0 lead only to have the Yankees put up three runs in the bottom of the first on doubles by Taylor and Sheets with Monzon adding a supporting single.

The 3-1 lead would hold strong as both teams were held scoreless in the second and third innings. In the fourth, the Yankees retired the side and Monzon tripled and scored on a steal to add another run for the Yankees.

In the fifth inning, the Yankees walked two and struck out three to get into the title game.

Boli went 2-for-2, Baumfalk 1-for-2 and Allan 1-for-2 for the Brewers. Taylor, Sheets and Monzon each went 2-for-2 for the Yankees. Three of the six hits were extra-base hits.

Championship game

Century 21 Cubs 7, Sears Yankees 6

An explosive first inning would prove to be the deciding factor for the outcome of this game with the Cubs scoring six runs to the Yankees' four.

Taylor, Williams, Sheets, Monzon and Ulmer all hit singles to help drive in four runs for the Yankees. Lucas and Stone singled while Lashley and Wallen doubled in the first.

Scott had a three-run triple.

In the second, Taylor singled ro drive in Dustin Payton for another run for the Yankees. A lead-off double by Lucas with a single from Bunger and a double from Stone added Lucas as the seveth run for the Cubs.

In the third, Monzon get stranded on third with his single in the inning. The Cubs' Matt Macfee got on with a walk only to be stranded as the Yankees struck out the next three hitters.

The Yankees added a run in the fourth on a single by Lance Garcia but stranded runner Keith Helm on second.

The Cubs retired the side in the top of the fifth to take the tournament championship.
