BEAVER CITY -- The Holbrook-Grant man charged with the death of a 28-year-old Arapahoe mother of two girls was transferred from Furnas County jail in Beaver City to Richard Young Hospital in Kearney Saturday.

Herchel Huff, facing charges of motor vehicle homicide in the death of Kasey Jo Warner, was committed on an emergency protection order to the Kearney hospital. A mental health board hearing is scheduled Wednesday, according to Furnas County Attorney Tom Patterson.

Patterson said that Huff's preliminary hearing, originally scheduled for Monday at 3:30 p.m., has been continued until Monday, Nov. 5.

Huff is accused of striking and killing Warner as she and her three-year-old daughter walked on a country road southwest of Arapahoe Oct. 3. He is charged with motor vehicle homicide, driving while intoxicated (fourth offense), tampering with a witness, refusal to submit to a chemical test and no proof of insurance.

Huff's bond was set at $500,000.

The case of a Hendley man charged with possession of a controlled substance (marijuana), possession with intent to deliver, possession of a firearm and possession of drug paraphernalia was bound over to Furnas County district court in a preliminary hearing in county court Monday morning.

Patterson said no date has been set yet for Kenneth Brakhahn's appearance in district court. Brakhahn, 42, was arrested Sept. 14, an a search warrant issued on information from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

Brakhahn posted 10 percent of his $50,000 bond and is not in jail.

  • This had better not be the start of an "innocent by reason of fill in the blank" plea.

  • Your right Jim, I hope it is not, but the way they stated it,

"was committed on an emergency protection order..."

sounds to me more like a suicide watch.

I wish the paper would elaborate a bit more.

  • "A mental health board hearing..."??? He had better not get out of what he is due on a "reason of insanity..." charge. DRUNK with multiple priors is not insane - it is drunk, irresponsible, and totally uncalled for! Do your time now for what you have done!
